Who is Silver Lake’s selfie woman?

Silver Lake Selfie Woman

SILVER LAKE — Stuck in slow moving traffic on the 5 Freeway, Eder Paz had time to notice the surroundings when the “weird artistic statue-thing” came into view near Riverside and Fletcher drives. There, mounted near the top of a large retaining wall was a sculpture of what to Paz looks  like an “old woman holding a flower [while] taking a selfie.” Since spotting the Silver Lake selfie woman, Paz and others have become obsessed trying to find out more.

“People in the Los Angeles subreddit kept saying it was art, which of course it is,” Paz said in an email.  “I’ve been driving past this weird artistic statue-thing for a few months now with no idea what it is.”

Paz first spotted the sculpture last fall, and Diane Edwardson of the Corralitas Red Car Property blog photographed the “communist style statue” in late November. The face, a blue flower and a hand holding what appears to be a cell phone are attached to the unfinished retaining wall of a failed condo project once planned for the hillside above Riverside Drive.

From the street, there’s no visible information about what the sculpture is about or who created it.  For now, it just remain a mysterious distraction to those passing by on the 5 Freeway

“With no clear indication on who did it,” Paz said, ” I have no idea what to make of it.”

Everyday driving by on the I-5, I am more and more impressed that this piece is still hanging. Fricking cool! Real EastsideArts

Drived passed it this morning and the statue was gone… the only thing left behind was the hand that held the flower because the flower is gone as well… bummer.
