EAST LOS ANGELES — A woman escaped an attacker who attempted to rape her while she was walking down the street to use a pay phone early this morning, according to the L.A.County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was walking near Cesar Chavez and Mednik avenues around midnight when the suspect drove by in a black-colored vehicle and pulled into a parking lot. As the victim walked by, the suspect got out of the vehicle and walked up behind the victim and began fondling her, said Sgt. Gonzalez at the East Los Angeles sheriff’s station.

The victim ran away, but the suspect caught up with the woman, groping her and pulling off her pants after she fell to the ground during a struggle. The victim fought off the attacker, running off to contact two persons, who called police.

The suspect fled in the vehicle in an unknown direction. Gonzalez said the victim did not sustain any injuries and the suspect remains at large. The suspect is described as a male Latino with dark hair, 30 to 35-years-old, wearing jean shorts.
