Skateboarder takes a gnarly ride down Echo Park’s Baxter Street

ECHO PARK — Driving down Baxter Street, one of the neighborhood’s steepest streets, can be a scary thing. But what’s it like on a skateboard? Don “The Nuge” Nguyen knows first-hand after speeding downhill on a section of Baxter between Alvarado Street and Lake Shore Avenue.  A video crew  and Thrasher magazine chronicled Nuge’s downhill ride.

Nuge and crew were impressed when they saw the descent for the first time:  “We just looked over and we’re like, “Holy shit, that’s fucking gnarly.”

Of course, if Nuge wanted something really gnarly he would have tried walking uphill on Baxter.

  1. That’s awesome.

  2. As a young man I used to love getting stone and then getting my friends in my car going over to Baxter crawling up the other side of the hill slowly and then getting close to the crest of the hill hitting the accelerator pedal as fast as my car could go down the steep end and scaring the S**T out of my friends ~ Try it you’ll like it ~ 🙂

    • My daughter used to roller blade “up* Baxter. When she was in 5th/6th grade.

    • oh. and my variation … I would inch my way up the hill with a car full of my daughter’s friends, telling them they had to push (the dashboard or back of the front seat) as hard as they could or we’d slip back down. And then when we got up and over, they’d still be pushing, and yep, a tap of the accelerator for a moment.

They always said “Do it again! Better than Disneyland!”

  3. The Main Spion

    Awesome and beautiful!

  4. Rebecca Ollice

Crazy! I know that street well and it was a bitch to walk up everyday from school. You are a maniac! Respect!! Now try Fargo, Ha. No, wait…,don’t!

  5. Martha Benedict

Next stop Eldred Street, the steepest in the City, located in Mt. Washington.

  6. What a waist of time.

  7. Nothing like young assholes making things dangerous for any driver or pedestrian in the area. I hope that the police see this and take the fool in. I especially like the comments above made by the illiterates.

  8. Skate and Die!

  9. there are more f**ks in that video than most people get in a lifetime.

  10. Ride this street on my motorcycles almost every day. Scariest part is the car drivers in a panic.
