Permit parking spreads in Echo Park

Permit-parking is already in place on several Echo Park streets

ECHO PARK — More Echo Park streets might be getting permit parking. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is recommending that overnight parking be prohibited on several streets east of Glendale Boulevard unless motorists have the required permits.

The proposal to create of the neighborhood’s newest Preferential Parking District has been in the works since 2014 after residents complained about sharing limited street parking with the patrons and visitors of businesses along Glendale. In addition, there was concern that a small-lot townhouse project, now under construction on Lake Shore Avenue, would attract more traffic to the area and reduce the amount of parking spaces to create driveways, according to letter from Councilman Mitch O’Farrell to the department of transportation.

If the City Council approves this parking district (see map below), only residents or their guests who purchase the necessary permits would be able to park on sections of Liberty Street, Scott Avenue, Berkeley Avenue and Lake Shore Avenue between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Those without a permit could get slapped with a $68 ticket.

In recent years, permit parking restrictions have been imposed on several Echo Park streets, primarily those located off of Sunset Boulevard.

Permit Parking Costs:

Annual Permit: $34 (three per household)
Visitor Permit: $22.50 for four months (two per household)
One-Day Guest Permit: $2.50
Cost of Violation: $68

  1. The city should make sure people are using available parking on their own property, garages and driveways, before taking away parking on public streets.

    • A lot of people who want permit parking don’t have these types of spaces available and they are taken up by bar/restaurant patrons.

      • They are public streets. 6pm-8am seems excessive. I’m certain there are many households using their garages for storage rather than parking…….

  2. What about Berkeley from Glendale to liberty? They are closer to the shopping center and wouldn’t people from the side of Berkeley that do need a permit just park 30steps away on the side of Berkeley that does not require permit!!! I don’t know about this plan

  3. IMO just another way for the city to make $$ in fines and fees from streets we are paying taxes for that they have not repaired. No good!

  4. The cost of the permit is peanuts (a year of priority overnight parking for less than a parking ticket.) These folks are getting one helluva a deal, that’s for sure!

    In your example, you list the cost for a one-day guest parking permit at $2.50.
    This is correct; however, the L.A. City Parking Violations Bureau regulations set that day as the 24 hour period from 12:01a.m. – 11;59p.m.
    A guest vehicle parking within the boundary of proposed Preferential District 203 from 6:00p.m. – 8:00a.m. would need to purchase one guest permit to cover the period up until 12 midnight and another guest permit to cover the new day beginning after midnight.
    In this situation the cost for a guest vehicle to park overnight is $2.50 X 2 = $5.00

I live on Glendale, between Scott and Montana…one of the only streets in the neighborhood (aside from Liberty) which doesn’t implement street cleaning…which means people live in their vans on the street, don’t move their cars for months, and the auto shop on Glendale and Scott parks the cars they are working on, 10 cars at a time, on the street for weeks. In the mean time, people park for the baseball games on Scott, Montana, Berkley and Lakeshore. I work late and sometimes spend 45 minutes driving around in circles looking for parking, usually end up having to walk blocks to get home from whatever spot I eventually find. I would gladly pay $34 to be able to park in the vicinity of my place, especially at night.
