Bomb scare shuts down Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park [updated]

ECHO PARK — A stretch of Sunset Boulevard near Dodger Stadium has been shut down as members of the LAPD bomb squad investigate a suspicious package.

Sunset is blocked at Douglas Street on the west and just east of Vin Scully Avenue. Several police vehicles are parked near a shopping center containing a Domino’s pizza and Button Mash bar and restaurant.

All traffic on Sunset, including Metro buses,  is being diverted to side streets or turning around. Pedestrians are not being allowed to enter the area.

Update @ 9:27 pm: The suspicious items were empty suitcases that had been left near the Super 8 Motel, said Sgt. Jack Richter with the LAPD Central Division. Police had received a call from someone at the motel who was concerned about the suitcases after they had remained unattended for most of the day. The suitcases were moved to the shopping center parking lot for closer examination.

The closure of Sunset caused a major inconvenience, Richter said, but “we are not going to take any chances.”

Update @ 8:47 pm: Pedestrians now being allowed to walk through as police leaving area.
