BOYLE HEIGHTS —  An estimated 400 kids and aduls attended this week’s grand opening festivities — which included a carnival, petting zoo and pony rides —  for the new Boys & Girls Club at the Estrada Courts public housing project.  It’s the second facility the Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley has opened in Boyle Heights. Last year, the nonprofit opened the Boys & Girls Club at the Ramona Gardens housing project.

The Oct. 18 grand opening included tours of the newly renovated community center, which includes a learning center, a STEM room, games room, kitchen, and study areas, said Pilar Diaz, Director of Community Partnerships & Resource Development for the Boys & Girls Club. A gymnasium was given a makeover with refinished floors, new lighting, and newly painted walls.

Diaz provided a summary of the services that the members can expect:

“The Club will offer enrichment activities for youth ages 6 to 18, including homework assistance, STEM, sports, Brent’s Club, leadership programs, and various field trips. The Club will also serve dinner to members Monday through Friday. Membership is free.”
