Get Your Costumes & Altars Ready: A guide to Eastside Dia de los Muertos and Halloween happenings



Halloween and Dia de los Muertos celebrations will kick into high gear over the next week across the Eastside. Day of the Dead events range from family-friendly festivals to those who want to dance the night away with a michelada in hand.  Meanwhile, a long-list of Halloween happenings  includes kid-friendly trick-or-treating events and an adult- dance party and costume contest.  Dogs won’t be left out of the fun –  a costume pageant will be held at the Silver lake Dog Park.

Family-Friendly Events & Festivals

Harvest Festival – Dia de Los Muertos

  • Friday, Oct. 28 | Elysian Heights
  • The kids and friends of Elysian Heights Elementary will celebrate the holiday with a Goblin Parade, games, food and crafts on the afternoon.

Trick or Treat on the Boolevard

  • Friday, Oct.  28 | Atwater Village
  • The Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual fall festival. Volunteers will decorate Glendale Boulevard for the hundreds of costumed kiddies that will have the opportunity to trick or treat for candies and goodies and enjoy other fun activities along the Boolevard.

Celebracion del Dia de los Muertos at Calvary Cemetery

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | East Los Angeles
  • The day will kick off with a mass and procession that will be followed by folk dancers, a mariachi concert and children’s activities.

Our Lady of Guadalupe School’s 4th Annual “Remembrance”

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | Rose Hills/El Sereno
  • This Dia de los Muertos festive cultural event will start at 2 p.m. and go until 10 p.m. with children’s activities, poetry and a blessing of the altars. A design-your-own-board workshop and skateboard ramps will also be on site.

Dia de los Muertos Kids Carnival

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | East Los Angeles
  • East Los Angeles Library will be hosting an afternoon of kid-friendly games and music. Children are encouraged to participate in a costume parade throughout the library.

East LA Civic Center Dia de los Muertos

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | East Los Angeles
  • There will be altars, art vendors and a Kid Zone at the event hosted by Supervisor Hilda Solis, the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation and Casa Cultural Saybrook.

Harvest Festival

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | Echo Park
  • InsideOut Church is hosting its first annual Harvest Festival with games, prizes, a bounce house, a photobooth, candy, food and music. There will also be a raffle to benefit local youth scholarships to Angeles Crest Christian Camp.

Boyle Heights Farmer’s Market presents Dia de los Muertos

  • Sunday, Oct. 30 | Boyle Heights
  • This event will celebrate Dia de los Muertos all day with a car show, fashion show, altars, music and more.

Cypress Park Recreation Center’s Halloween Costume Contest

  • Sunday, Oct. 31 |Cypress Park
  • The Cypress Park Recreation Center will be transformed into a Halloween wonderland for the whole family, with a Moonbounce, haunted rooms and carnival games. All-ages costume contests will be held throughout the night, and the 1st annual dog costume contest will be held at 7 p.m.

LA-32 Neighborhood Council’s 1st Annual Halloween Trick or Treat

  • Monday, Oct. 31 | El Sereno
  • LA-32 Neighborhood Council’s 1st Annual Halloween Trick or Treat at La Cocina is an opportunity for early trick or treaters to come out and enjoy free candy, snacks and Halloween activities. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet and greet with Derby Doll skaters.

Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration and Art Exhibit

  • Tuesday, Nov. 1 | Lincoln Heights
  • Las Fotos Project, a community-based photography program for teenage girls, will be hosting an opening reception and celebration for their Dia de los Muertos exhibition. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos, food and recuerdos of loved ones that have passed on to place on the community altar.

East Los Angeles College 5th Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival

  • Tuesday, Nov. 1 | Monterey Park
  • Grammy award winning, Quetzal, and East L.A.’s Los Cambalache will be performing at ELAC’s 5th Annual Dia de los Muertos festival, one of the largest in Southern California. The event, hosted by the Chicana/o Studies Department, will have more than 20 food and art vendors.

Annual Día de los Muertos Community Procession

  • Tuesday, Nov. 1 | Cypress Park
  • The procession begins at Nightingale Middle School parking lot  and ends at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, where there will be music, an Aztec ceremony, light snacks, and refreshments.

Dia De Los Muertos Lincoln Heights – Remembering Our Homeless Who Died On Our Streets Nameless

  • Wednesday, Nov. 2 | Lincoln Heights
  • The Epiphany Church will be constructing an altar and ofrendas that focus on those who have died alone, homeless and nameless. Attendees are asked to bring to donate a new pair of socks to be placed on the Altar of the Homeless/Nameless. All socks will be given directly to the local homeless.


8th Annual HOWL-O-WEEN Doggie Costume Pageant

  • Sunday, Oct. 30 | Silver Lake
  • The costume pageant will take place at the Silver Lake Dog Park and is open to big and small dogs. The best costumed dogs will take home a prize.

Cypress Park Recreation Center’s Halloween Costume Contest

  • Sunday, Oct. 31 |Cypress Park
  • All-ages costume contests will be held throughout the night, and the 1st annual dog costume contest will be held at 7 p.m.

Bootie LA: Halloween Booootie

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | Echo Park
  • The Echoplex will be hosting a spooky dance party and midnight costume contest with a $200 prize for best costume in a number of different categories. L.A.’s DJ Shyboy and Seattle’s DJ Freddy, King of Pants will face off in a Freddy v. Jason DJ battle as ghostly go-go dancers take over the dance floor.

Vincent Price Art Museum Day of the Dead: Student Altars

  • Saturday, Oct. 29 | East Los Angeles College
  • At the show’s opening reception, Chicano Studies students of East Los Angeles College will be showcasing altars and ofrendas (offerings) that focus on specific aspects of Chicano and Mexican culture.

Asylum: Sultry Sweet Burlesque & Variety Show 

  • Sunday, Oct. 30 | Silver Lake
  • El Cid restaurant’s dark halls and blood-red leather sofas and lighting make for the perfect setting for this burlesque show that is sure to be as spooky as it is sultry and sweet.

Eastside Cafe Dia de los Muertos 15 year anniversary

  • Wednesday, Nov. 2 | El Sereno
    Eastside Cafe will be celebrating those that have passed on as well as 15 years as an autonomous collective with music, performances and food.

Self Help Graphics & Art’s 43rd Annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration

  • Wednesday, Nov. 2 | Boyle Heights
  • Self Helps Graphics & Art does Dia de los Muertos right with its 43rd annual night of commemoration that starts with a procession at Mariachi Plaza at 4 p.m. and goes on until 11 p.m. with music from legendary Chicana punk icon Alice Bag, vendors and art. Self Help Graphics Art’s Dia de los Muertos event is known to be the one of the first to take place in the United States.

Dia de los DEAD #11

  • Wednesday, Nov. 2 | Boyle Heights
  • Boyle Heights’ Eastside Luv wine bar y QueSo will be hosting its 11th annual Dia de los Muertos celebration with live music by Maywood’s soulful rock band The Altons. Doors open at 2 pm and the celebration goes on into the night with a Day of the Dead photo exhibition and live body paint exhibition. People are encouraged to come in their best Calaca face paint.

Art Opening: Dia de los Muertos: Honoring the other side with prints and primal sculptures

  • Saturday, Nov. 2 | Silver Lake
  • Visual artist Melora Walters will be showcasing prints inspired by Dia de los Muertos that she has created each year since 2009. The opening will be hosted by the Los Angeles County Store.

Dia de los Muertos en Noches de Trova

  • Friday, Nov. 4 | Eagle Rock
  • Center for the Arts Eagle Rock will be hosting a number of musicians performing trova-style songs – a musical genre with Cuban roots – to commemorate those that have passed on. Food, drink and art vendors will be present.

El Velorio a Day of the Dead Event

  • Saturday, Nov. 5 | Lincoln Heights
  • Plaza de la Raza will be hosting a mariachi themed 21 & over event with live music by metal-mariachi mashup band Metalachi and the Smiths/Morrissey inspired mariachi band, Mariachi Manchester. A lowrider car show, movie screenings and Aztec Dancers will keep attendees busy between drinks.

Halloween Haunts

The Tension Experience: Ascension

  • Through Sunday,  Nov. 13 | Boyle Heights
  • The Boyle Heights warehouse-turned-24-room horror experience was created by the director of Saw, Darren Lynn Bousman. The two-hour immersive theatre event has been known to push participants out of their comfort zone and into the eerie world of Bousman’s “Ascension.”
