Shopper & Diner: Booze coming to Gigi’s in Filipinotown; Rudy’s opens in Highland Park with free haircuts; lamb tacos in Boyle Heights

A notice on the window of Gigi’s in Historic Filipinotown states there may be some booze coming to the busy Cuban café. The bakery has applied for a license to serve alcohol although when it actually happens is yet to be determined. Gigi’s is a small-scale Porto’s-type café with a homegrown vibe that serves cakes such as tres leches, sandwiches served on Cuban bread, empanadas, potato balls and coffee. Gigi’s is located in the 2200 block of West Temple Street in Historic Filipinotown.

  • Want a free haircut? Rudy’s Barbershop in Highland Park is offering free haircuts this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in celebration of its grand opening. In addition to the free cuts, the barbershop chain is giving folks a beard trim and a buzz cut free of charge. Neighboring businesses Civil Coffee, Cafe Birdie, and The Quiet Life are joining in the grand opening celebration with live music, food and exclusives. Rudy’s Highland Park is located in the 5600 Block of Figueroa Boulevard.
  • Fat Dragon, a new Chinese-American eatery, is making the move into the former K&C Donuts in the strip mall where Trois Familia is located in Silver Lake, Eater LA reports. Fat Dragon comes from Allen Wong of Sticky Rice restaurant group. Fat Dragon is located in the 3500 block of Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake.
  • Craving lamb tacos? Then head to La Barbacha in Boyle Heights, the Los Angeles Times reports. The “spoon tender” lamb is served with thick corn tortillas, beans, rice and a bowl of lamb consommé to boot. La Barbacha is located in the 2500 block of Cesar Chavez Boulevard in Los Angeles.
