Man dies outside Echo Park church

ECHO PARK — A homeless man died tonight outside a church after his companions tried but failed to keep him alive, police said.

“His buddies tried CPR,” said Sgt. Teresa Anderson with the LAPD Northeast Division. But the man was declared dead at the scene by firefighters, she said.

The cause of death is not known but the incident is not being treated as a crime, Anderson said. The man was described as a local male transient, possibly in his 50s.

Police responded at about 8:30 p.m. to the incident near Liberty and Reservoir streets next to the brick InsideOut Church Los Angeles, which has also been known as the Golden West Church. One Eastsider reader said the police activity was centered on the Reservoir side of the church.

Earlier today, the body of a person, who was believed to be homeless, was found in Lincoln Heights.

  1. Good to know this has 36 likes on Facebook.

  2. It seems shameful that there are so many church buildings throughout the city that are empty at night – and they must be warmer and drier than the sidewalk. I guess it’s a bit too radical of an idea to suggest that these tax-exempt churches open their doors to the homeless on cold, rainy evenings.
