NYT praises Boyle Heights student publication; teachers declare Occidental College a “sanctuary campus”

  • Our friends at Boyle Heights Beat, the newspaper and website produced mostly by neighborhood teens, gets a write up and praise from the New York Times Opinion section for its reporting on neighborhood issues, including  the concerns of undocumented residents worried about their future under a Trump presidency. “Outsiders, including Mr. Trump, might learn something from it,” said the NYT.
  • The faculty at Occidental College voted to declare the Eagle Rock school a “sanctuary campus” for undocumented immigrants threatened with deportation. Administrators are working on a definition of sanctuary and how it will be applied to the school. Oxy Weekly
