Here’s five delicious reasons to get your grub on in Boyle Heights according to neighborhood blog, Boyle Heights Beat. But instead of hearing it from a foodie who does not live in the neighborhood, the editor enlisted local resident Maria Arredondo to dish out her favorite spots.

There’s VaKA Burgers, whose namesake burger includes a beer-batter-tempura ring, muenster cheese, bacon jam and VaKA Signature Smoked BBQ Sauce. Then there are the burritos, tortas, $1 tacos and more at a nameless taco stand in front of the Wyvernwood Apartments.

Al & Bea’s taquito plate also hits the spot. It’s comprised of three taquitos topped with guacamole, lettuce, tomato and cheese and comes with rice and beans on the side. First Street Taqueria is a healthy choice, with its tasty tortas and kale drink. Puertos Del Pacifico is a hang out spot with modestly priced tacos, ceviche and such and different flavored michiladas.

VaKA Burger is located in the 2700 block of Olympic Boulevard. The nameless taco stand in front of the Wyvernwood Apartments is located on 8th between Euclid and Dacotah Streets. Al & Bea’s is located in the 2000 block of E. 1st Street. First Street Taqueria is located in the 1800 block of E. 1 Street. Puertos Del Pacifico is located in the 1200 block of Soto Street.

In other Shopper & Diner News:

  • The Friend is the latest watering hole to head to Silver Lake, Eater LA reports. The artsy bar dons a pink floor, open ceiling, disco ball and a pinball machine. Expect shrimp cocktails, charcuterie plates, avocado toast and couscous bowls. Opens New Years Eve. The Friend is located in the 2600 block of Hyperion in Silver Lake.
  • Two of the most “thrilling restaurant openings” are on the Eastside, LA Weekly reports. There’s the unnamed Highland Park project from the Everson Royce Bar team in Highland Park. We can only speculate what’s to come. Business partners Randy Clement and Matt Molina told the Weekly it will be “an Italian eatery on Figueroa whose concept is under development.” Zack Pollack’s (think Alimento) Cosa Buona also made the list. The Echo Park Italian eatery is expected to open sometime next year and will offer pizza, comfort food and Italian American classics.
  • Some of Los Angeles’ best pasta is in Silver Lake, Los Angeles Magazine reports. Try Alimento’s tortellini in brodo “al contrario,” which resembles Italian soup dumplings, or Kettle Black’s pappardelle with maitake mushroom and nasturtium butter. Both located in Silver Lake, Alimento is in the 1700 block of Silver Lake Boulevard and Kettle Black is in the 3700 block of W. Sunset Boulevard.
