When Literary Death Match debuted in a Manhattan speakeasy in 2006, it was simply a whim, an oddball mash-up to test the boundaries of literature and comedy. Now, the live event — hosted by writer-comedian Adrian Todd Zuniga — is a cultural powerhouse that’s been featured in over 60 cities around the globe.

The show, called “the most entertaining reading series ever” by the LA Times, features four writers who read their own work for seven minutes, who are then judged by a cast of all-star judges who crack hilarious and wise in response to the author’s work. The show ends with an absurdly comical climax — think “Pin the Mustache on Hemingway,” or a literary spelling bee featuring complicated author names — to decide who takes home the LDM crown. Sounds nutty, right? But it all comes together magically on-stage. Actor Michael C. Hall, two-time LDM alum and star of Showtime’s Dexter, called it “a highbrow, lowbrow literary gameshow clusterfuck” and the Nashville Scene called it “as engaging as the best concerts, plays and stand-up comedy sets I’ve ever seen, all rolled into one.”

Part of what’s made LDM a global success is it’s use of celebrity and comedy to bring attention to ground-breaking writers. The show has featured over 1,200 judges like award-winning writer-directors Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Jill Soloway (Transparent); actors Parker Posey, Keegan-Michael Key and Michael Shannon; comedians Tig Notaro, David Cross and Rob Delaney; musicians Henry Rollins and Moby; and celebrity authors Chuck Pahlaniuk (Fight Club), Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), Neil Gaiman (Coraline) and Billy Collins (U.S. Poet Laureate).

LDM continues this tradition on January 21 at The Orpheum as part of the Riot LA Comedy Festival, featuring an all-star judging lineup of Whitney Cummings (comedian and 2 Broke Girls creator); Oscar-winning screenwriter Graham Moore (The Imitation Game); Mary Lynn Rajskub (24; Mr. Show); and actor Sam Richardson (VEEP). They’ll comment on the work of TV writer/playwright Marco Ramirez (Daredevil; The Defenders) & playwright (The Royale); Zach Anner (author of If at Birth You Don’t Succeed) and TV writer/actor Hannah Friedman (Wet Hot American Summer). Just added – two-time world slam champion Buddy Wakefield will be the final reader, with more to come. Check out the lineup at LiteraryDeathMatch.com.
