The Pussy Hat puts Atwater Village shop owner in the political and fashion spotlight

ATWATER VILLAGE —  When the Women’s March is held in Washington, D.C. on the day after Donald Trump’s presidential inaugural, many of the demonstrators will be wearing Pussy Hats, pink, cat-eared knitted caps based on a pattern designed by the owner of The Little Knittery yarn shop on Glendale Boulevard.

Kat Coyle came up with the pattern after being approached by Jayna Zweiman and Krista Suh, two friends and knitters who wanted to do something after being devastated by Hillary Clinton’s loss to Trump in the November election.  That’s how they came up with the PussyHat Project – a reference to Trump’s infamous remarks that were caught on tape – to support the Women’s March. More than 60,000 hats have been knitted or crocheted by people nationwide, according to an Associated Press story.

Coyle has made the pattern for her Pussy Power Hat available for free, and her shop has been hosting Friday night “Pussyhat Knitting Parties.”  The original Pussy Power Hat pattern calls for hot pink, Malabrigo Worsted yarn.  Many knitters have adapted the design, making  changes and adding embellishments.

Suh told the Associated Press:

“It’s really been just incredible …. The process of making the hats and preparing for the march and really including everyone, everywhere who wants to participate but may not be able to march has been so much of this project.”

  1. This pattern is nothing new. It’s just knitted flat and seamed at the top and side. I am a knitter myself and don’t like this particular pattern. I bet she charges alot of money for her hats.

    • The pattern is designed to be easy for people new to knitting. The hats are given away for free.

If you’re experienced and would rather make your own pattern, that’s cool, too!

    • LA Native, re-read the article maybe? ….”Coyle has made the pattern for her Pussy Power Hat available for free”
      Reading is FUNDAMENTAL!

    • I wish that my favorite hobby was never, never mixed with any type of politics. The knitting shops are the places where I go to relax with my new friends, and not to think of my war zone country that I came from. I wish that we knitted 60.000 sweaters and donate them to our women and their children in the Women Shelter, downtown LA. At least the group in need would benefit, comparing to individuals who are just profiting and getting fame of this. What we are trying to accomplish? I don’t think this is the way of helping and supporting each other. Stay calm and keep knitting.
      With love and respect.

      • That’s a great idea, you should do that, design and post free patterns and get a group together to knit for women and children in shelters. I’m sure many of these same women would happy to help you with that.

      • Now is not the time to stay calm and ignore the issues of the day. Now is the time to get involved and to speak out – forcefully but peacefully. I love this idea and I think it embodies the principles of peaceful protest.

I understand why you don’t want to be reminded of your past, and of the country you left. That’s perfectly legitimate. But The man who gave us this three-day weekend would surely approve of this event.

  2. LA Native: Pardon my saying so but your comment completely misses the point of this article. Wow.

  3. This is a such a great idea if you’re making it for toddler. So ridiculous. Mature women should focus on something more important rather than twiddling their fingers with a metal stick.

    • Like what – sitting around and watching football? Surfing the net at home, alone? Making you a sandwich? What activities do you deem appropriate for mature women? How do you spend your free time?

    • Yeah, something more important, like commenting on an obscure (sorry, Eastsider) website.

  4. I would highly support your actions if there were not so much hypocrisy. Women support? Of course that applies only to the ones that think like you, any difference of opinion is labeled as them republicans. They are racist, sexist, bigots, and thats where tho story ends. Living in a romantic bubble is a comfortable place. Majority of people who voted for Trump are not obsessed with gender issues or race or LGBT. For years they are struggling with everyday life family, jobs, food, quality of life that is heading towards 3rd world countries. They became flyover zones between LA and NY , places from where politicians and ideologues before they collect millions of dollars for self interest. We hear gender inequality at work place. What happen last 8 years with Obama and Hillary in charge? Hollywood loud mouths complain about it too. Who was stopping them to pay females more ? Still federal and State employees present discrepancy in salary. Talking about women respect. Snoop dogg ( former pimp), JZ ( with his songs about bitches ) ; very close friends with former president. That same Entertainment industry raising voices about Trumps sexism is full of derogatory language. I didn’t see or hear president distancing him self from it . On contrary it became major force in his presidency. Obviously same rules don’t apply to everybody. I’m not republican or democrat and I didn’t vote for neither one of the candidates. Obama is a good man with family values that can be a great example to many people. Some of his politics i liked and some I didn’t. Reason I’m saying this is because some individuals will mark my comments as me been a ” racist ” because i didn’t agree with some of Obamas politics.
I’m a USA citizen who is watching country been divided and digging trenches, creating very dangerous climate that can have devastated consequences. That applies to both sides. This is the key term ” both sides”. Differences of opinion don’t exist anymore, its all or nothing. With that mentality i wish luck to all of us because in that case we are all doomed. I wish you luck with your project and while you are doing it maybe make some space in your heart for difference of the opinions.
    Best wishes

    • I suppose there are people who will vote for, and fight for an inclusive, egalitarian future of America and do not consider it a “romantic” notion, but a furthering and defense of what they see as inalienable basic rights, and on the other side there are people who just want some good jobs. Amirite?

    • First world problems are such a drag!

  5. LA Native is a terrible knitter and ivoted for Trump. Tory and LA Native are doing it!

  6. Is this going to impeach president-elect hahahaha! Come on people don’t waste your time. I as a woman am embarrassed by this whole “kitty” act.
