Body found in Echo Park Lake [updated]

ECHO PARK — Police tonight are investigating the discovery of a man’s body in Echo Park Lake.

The body was pulled out of the northwest corner of the lake in the lotus bed after a passerby contacted an officer on a foot beat at about 4 p.m., said Capt. Jonathan Tom with the LAPD Rampart Division.

Homicide investigators are on the scene but it has not been determined if a crime has been committed, he said.

A worker inside a food truck parked near where the body was discovered said he had walked by the spot earlier but did not notice anything unusual. He said he heard no gunshots or yelling before police arrived.

Update @ 9:34 p.m.:  The incident is being handled as a death investigation, not a murder, said LAPD spokesman Sal Ramirez.  He had no information about the man’s age or race/ethnicity.
