SILVER LAKE — American Apparel founder Dov Charney is working hard to make a comeback after losing control of his company. But, in order to finance his new endeavors and stay afloat, Charney is squeezing as much money as he can out of his hilltop Silver Lake mansion. Not only has he refinanced the property, according to Los Angeles magazine, he has also been offering short-term rentals on Airbnb.
At the peak of his career, Charney paid more than $4 million for the Garbutt House, a large gray house with steeply-pitched roofs built in the 1920s by industrialist Frank Garbutt.
Charney, who is now starting up a new apparel company, refers to his home as a “business campus” and is “Airbnb-ing a couple of the rooms to help cover the mortgage,” according to a lengthy L.A. Magazine profile titled The Resurrection of Dov Charney. A story about Charney last year in Business of Fashion said that Charney’s Airbnb offering was a “suite with a private entrance.”
A check on Airbnb rentals in Silver Lake didn’t turn up anything at Charney’s home, which is located on Apex Avenue in the gated Hathaway Hill Estates development. But, with eight bedrooms and more than 12,000-square-feet of space, Charney certainly a lot of space to rent out.
Update: One of our readers found a $118-a-night Airbnb listing in the Garbutt House.
