Shopper & Diner: Top child-friendly eateries per Frogtown chef; Magpies’ soft serve; Bar Angeles debuts in Silver Lake


Elysian chef David Thorne shares “7 Great places in Northeast L.A. to dine with kids,” in the LA Weekly. The mentions include Pine & Crane for its go-to dumplings, Wax Paper Co. for its “solid sandwiches,” Dune for its hearty eggplant sandwich, India Sweets and Spices for its budget-friendly menu and Proof Bakery for its petite sandwiches.

Pine & Crane is located in the 1500 block of Griffith Park Boulevard in Silver Lake. Wax Paper Co. is located in the 2900 block of Knox Avenue in Frogtown. Proof Bakery, India Sweets and Spices and Dune are located within walking distance in the 3100 block of Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village.

  • The Los Angeles Times examines the development and science behind the creation of Magpies Soft Serve in Silver Lake. Apparently, chefs and owners Warren and Rose Schwartz had a few soft-serve-related mishaps prior to opening Magpies about a year ago. Now, the couple has perfected their recipes and is serving up soft serve for all to enjoy. Magpies Soft Serve is located in the 2600 block of Griffith Park Boulevard in Silver Lake.
  • Bar Angeles is landing on Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Silver Lake, Eater LA reports. The chill space is equipped with a section dedicated to late musician Elliott Smith, who is also commemorated with a mural on the bar’s exterior facade. The mural was installed after Smith died in 2003. Expect sandwiches, small plates and pizza from chef Joey Booterbaugh. Brooklyn native Greg Mills is at the helm of the bar. Bar Angeles is located in the 4300 block of Sunset Boulevard.
  • Wok on Soto took over the Tong Sing space in Boyle Heights, Eater LA reports. It’s another Chinese takeout and delivery spot with all of the classics. Wok on Soto is located in the 300 block of Soto Street in Boyle Heights.
