ECHO PARK — Customers at The Park Restaurant know Georgie Pudlo and Jimmy Wirch as part of the regular staff. But once a month, the friends and coworkers become Maebe A. Girl and Izzy A. She, hosts of a dinnertime drag show at The Park known as Dress Hall.

While campy, live drag shows have been a staple at many gay bars and clubs, Pudlo and Wirch wanted to expose the shows to a wider audience. With the approval of restaurant owner and chef Josh Siegel, the monthly Dress Hall shows began last fall.

“We thought it would be a fun idea to bring a monthly drag show to the restaurant,” said Pudlo, aka Maebe A. Girl. “We wanted to bring drag to a demographic that might not necessarily have access to, or know about, what a drag show is all about.”

Pudlo and Wirch have been performing in drag together for a little more than two years. In addition to the monthly shows at The Park, Pudlo also performs solo in drag at Exposure Drag, a weekly show at the Offbeat Bar in Highland Park.

Pudlo and Wirch perform four times a night during the monthly show at The Park, with each performance (there are two versions) lasting about 10 to 12 minutes. Each show has a theme, like “Beauty and the Feast” or “Psychic Hotline.” This month’s Dress Hall on Saturday, Feb. 11 will be devoted to Valentine’s Day (Reservations are recommended.) The performers write the dialogue, design their costumes and do their own makeup

“It’s really involved, but totally worth it to see everyone’s reactions while we perform,” Pudlo said.

There is no additional charge for the show, said Wirch.

“Just come on in and enjoy your dinner, and we throw in the entertainment for free,” Wirch said. “Although tipping the drag queens is also recommended.”
