LAPD explains what prompted officers to shoot Silver Lake woman

SILVER LAKE — Police have released an account of what lead officers to open fire and wound a woman on Monday night after she emerged from a residence armed with a rifle.

Police identified the woman as 45-year-old Shellie Cooke, who underwent surgery for her injury and was eventually booked on charges of brandishing a weapon.

Officers from the Rampart Division were called to the 1300 block of Edgecliffe Drive at 3:28 pm on March 6 to look into a report of an intoxicated woman armed with a gun who was refusing to leave a residence.

Here, according to a police department summary, is what happened next:

“When the officers arrived on scene they contained the home and made various attempts to make contact with Cooke, via the police vehicle public address system and telephone but were unsuccessful. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) personnel were requested and responded to the location for a barricaded suspect. As SWAT and CNT personnel were arriving on scene, Cooke exited the home, armed with a rifle and pointed it at the patrol officers. The officers used a less lethal Bean Bag Device in an attempt to take her into custody but ultimately the incident resulted in an OIS.

Cooke sustained a gunshot wound and fell to the ground with the rifle; at which time she was taken into custody without further incident. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported her to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery for her injury and was subsequently listed in critical condition.

A .22 caliber rifle was recovered near Cooke and no officers or bystanders were injured. Cooke was eventually booked and charged for brandishing, 417 ( C ) of the California Penal Code.”

The department is now investigating the incident to determine if policies and procedures were followed. Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is urged to call the LAPD at (213) 486-5230 or provide information anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).

  1. I’m surprised this even made the news. A white person shot by the police? Oh wait, it’s a woman. Mystery solved.

  2. Thanks LAPD and other responders. Very glad no officers or neighbors were injured or killed during this incident.

  3. Why were the cops there in the first place? No info is given. A lot of people are getting pushed out of their homes in this area.

Um…beyond that, did you miss the part where she pointed said gun at the police?

Yes, I”m sure gentrification was responsible for her behavior. 🙄
