710 Freeway tunnel headed to a vote; Border Patrol detains Boyle Heights immigration activist

Morning Report

  • A report by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recommended that a nearly 5-mile, $5.4 billion freeway tunnel would be the best way to close the 710 Freeway gap between El Sereno and Pasadena. However, a committee of MTA board members voted 3-2 in favor of a lower-cost alternative, including enhanced bus service and street and traffic signal improvements. The full Metro board is scheduled to vote on the matter next week. L.A. Times & SGV Tribune
  • Claudia Rueda, a Boyle Heights resident and immigration rights activist, was picked up by border patrol agents one month after her mother was also taken into custody.  A lawyer for Rueda, a Cal State L.A. student who is in the country illegally, claimed that detention is in retaliation for his client’s efforts to defend her mother. U.S. officials said it was connected to a drug bust in which her father was arrested last month.  L.A. Times

  1. Screw the 710 tunnel project. It’s too expensive, and will create more hazardous air quality in the neighborhoods that would surround it. If Alhambra wants it so bad, let them build it in their city!
