Cedillo boosted by Bray-Ali scandals in District 1 runoff but is criticized over staff responsiveness

Though Councilman Gil Cedillo is benefitting from his opponent’s recent troubles in the District 1 runoff, he still faces criticism that his staff has been unresponsive and that they don’t attend community events, according to the L.A. Times.

After having refused a Times reporter’s requests for an interview during the primary, Cedillo spoke to The Times last week, saying he is taking action in response to criticism that his office is unresponsive:

“It’s unacceptable,” he said of those complaints, adding that his office has replaced staff members in the last six months and that constituents can expect an “upgrade.” He also acknowledged that such changes may be too late for some in the district. “I say, OK, I understand if you don’t want to vote for me,” Cedillo said.

Cedillo’s challenger in the runoff, Joe Bray-Ali, has been losing support over comments he made in a web forum that encourages racism and fat-shaming. Bray-Ali also recently admitted to extramarital affairs and problems with his business taxes.

The runoff election is scheduled for May 16. The First Council District includes all or portions of Angeleno Heights, Cypress Park, Echo Park, Glassell Park, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights and Mount Washington. Don’t Know What District You Are In? Go Here

  1. Ceballo Inc. Remind me of ghost! Only some people claim to see or hear them, but I guess they got their reasons for remaining in the dark.

  2. It sounds like Cedillo might be humbled and ready to do a better job for his constituents. Let’s hope.

As I’ve mentioned before Cedillo at the very least demonstrates the courage to sometimes go against the wishes of council member Koretz and his wealthy and celebrity constituents. None of the other council members seem to ever do that.

If Cedillo is voted back in and sticks to his guns regular people might be allowed to build granny flats in their backyards which would be a huge victory for those who need to see solutions that to bring more affordable housing. Sadly Koretz and many of his Bell Air/Beverly Crest constituents don’t want regular people to have such solutions and their voices carry the most weight in our city.

  3. I’ve never seen a Cedillo staff member at a Glassell Park Neighborhood Council meeting (granted, I don’t go to them all). It’s strange that they’re so MIA.

  4. Cedillo’s staff is MIA. Walk into the Highland Park office and there’s an echo. Mitch O’Farrel’s staff is always on it, involved, proactive. I wish we had Mitch in CD 1. Although I do not agree with Bray Ali’s personal choices, I still think he would be a better councilman for CD 1 at this point in time.

    • Next time folks should seek out someone more akin to O’Farrell- someone with boots on the ground and hardworking. Bray-Ali may may have seemed like such a guy but the revelations were truly disturbing. His responses since not helped.

In a recent facebook post Joe accused Cedillo of being “anti-Mexican” because some bronze statues of Mexican generals were stolen from the park on his watch. Leaving aside that metal thieves have become a big challenge, these are not the words of a guy who has learned his lessons. The accusation is on its face racist and unfair.

Joe comes off increasingly as a desperate character who thrives on being the center of attention – even for all the wrong reasons.

On the good side, Gil Cedillo has gotten a good scare and that is likely to push him to do a better job.

  5. Chale ConCedillo

How many times have we heard Cedillo boasts at every candidate forum and townhall meeting, Radio, TV, Newspaper Interview that he is the Veteran Politician with a great track record and his record speaks for itself…

1- If Cedillo was a good as he says his record is, WHY is he the ONLY Recumbent who DID NOT GET RE-ELECTED?

    2. Why is having so much trouble running against a ROOKIE opponent?

So much for his track record, He has NOT LEARNED TO SERVE the community that is why he is where he is right now.

  6. The worst of the 2 is still Cedillo! My vote for Bray-Ali

  7. Who are these crazies that will still vote for Bray Ali? Are they Trump voters?
Everyone thought that Trump would lose after the “grab the pussy” comments,
but crazies voted for him. You have to be crazy to vote for Bray Ali.
He has STOLEN from the public by not paying 48,00$ in taxes.
    We are the public.
You think he won’t steal from us once in office? You are crazy to vote for an admitted liar.

Oh and don’t so naive to believe Bray Ali is going to stop development.
Wake up people! We need to vote Cedillo and make sure he serves us, the public.

  8. After hearing Cedillo interviewed on the radio today I dislike him even more. No good choices here. I don’t think Cedillio will be humbled and do a better job, I think he will be vindictive toward the neighborhoods that didn’t vote for him. On the bright side, who ever wins can eventually be recalled right? Maybe there is some hope of getting someone better?

  9. We need a woman in that seat. Jackie Goldberg!!!
