  • One person was injured after a fire broke out in a row of storefronts in Highland Park. The Eastsider
  • Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for $3.9 million worth of improvements – ranging from sidewalk repairs to new bus benches and street trees – in the area around the Mariachi Plaza Gold Line station in Boyle Heights. MyNewsLA
  • Michael Christopher Mejia, a gang member and convicted felon, plead not guilty to fatally shooting his cousin in East Los Angeles and a police officer in Whittier. Whittier Daily News
  • The City Council voted to declare a 1920s-era bungalow court in Echo Park a historic cultural monument. The Eastsider
  • A civil trial is beginning over allegations that L.A. Unified failed to prevent and covered up the sexual abuse of students by a former teacher at El Sereno Elementary. The teacher was arrested in 2010 but was never prosecuted over the criminal charges because of a lack of evidence. Daily News
  • Incumbent First District Councilman Gil Cedillo won the contentious runoff against cycling advocate Joe Bray-Ali. The Eastsider
  • No results came from a renewed search around Arroyo Park next to Highland Park for 5-year-old Aramazd Andressian Jr. The child was reported missing on April 22, the day his father was found passed out at Arroyo Seco Park in South Pasadena, with his car doused with gasoline. CBSLA
  • Echo Park now has its own brewery. Sage Vegan Bistro has opened its brewpub in the historic Jensen’s Recreation Center. The micro-brewery and full bar, connected to the restaurant next door, will be making and serving specialty beers — such as a habanero pilsner and a rosemary-beet amber — under The Sage’s Brew label.   • A nearly 5-mile, $5.4 billion freeway tunnel would be the best way to close the 710 Freeway gap between El Sereno and Pasadena, according to a report by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But a committee of MTA board members voted 3-2 in favor of a lower-cost alternative, including enhanced bus service and street and traffic signal improvements. L.A. Times and SGV Tribune
  • Police released surveillance video of an attempted murder suspect who stabbed an Echo Park man several times after they got into an argument by a Sunset Boulevard taco truck earlier this month. The Eastsider
  • Claudia Rueda, a Boyle Heights resident and immigration rights activist, was picked up by border patrol agents one month after her mother was also taken into custody. A lawyer for Rueda, a Cal State L.A. student who is in the country illegally, claimed her detention is in retaliation for his client’s efforts to defend her mother. U.S. officials said it was connected to a drug bust in which her father was arrested last month. L.A. Times
  • A suspected drunk driver was charged with a hitting a pedestrian and numerous parked cars on Descanso Drive. Police said the driver was headed westbound on Descanso when he struck a woman in the crosswalk, then lost control of the vehicle and struck four parked cars. The Eastsider
  • The co-directors of “Making a Murderer” – Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos – bought the Los Feliz home of L.A. Philharmonic conductor and music director Gustavo Dudamel. L.A. Times
