How do you pronounce the name of Echo Park’s ‘Taix’ restaurant?

ECHO PARK Tay-ks? Is that that how you pronounce the name of that French place on Sunset? Or is it Tays?

The restaurant Taix has been in business in Los Angeles for 90 years — with more than half of that time spent on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. And yet, who among us is confident how to pronounce the name?

According to LA Weekly, the Taix family, which owns the restaurant, pronounces it “Tex.”

Yes, all you French speakers, the “x” at the end of a word is generally silent. But Michael Taix told the Weekly that’s not necessarily how it works with proper names.

Still, the author of the article, Catie Disbato, notes that she herself pronounces it “tay-ks.” Otherwise, her friends won’t know what restaurant she’s talking about.

  1. Shouldn’t it be pronounced Tie-yee?

  2. Actually, for us ‘French speakers’, it should be pronounced like ‘Tex’, as the ‘aix’ is pronounced just like Aix-en-Provence. And that’s also how the French and the Taix family pronounces it.

  3. I always wondered.
