LINCOLN HEIGHTS — The Boys Volleyball Team at Lincoln High was celebrating this week after winning a CIF L.A. City Division 4 Championship, marking a big turnaround for the team, said coach Edwin Yau.
The team went from a 2-11 record last year to being ranked 2nd in the Northern League with an overall match record of 14-4, said Yau, who also works as a social worker at the school.
What did the team do to turn itself into a powerhouse this year? Yau explains:
“We attended tournaments and played against tougher opponents. The team grew throughout the season in communication and cohesiveness. The students began encouraging each other and lifting each other up instead of blaming.
We talked a lot about discipline and character. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Many of the players are seniors and going into the next endeavor in their lives. I encourage them to take what they learn in discipline, commitment, and excitement and apply it to their future goals whether it be getting into college, pursuing a spouse, or starting a job.”
Here are some of the honors that team members came away with:
- All City D4 player of the year: Yovany Mata
- All City D4 1st team: Ivan Huang, Calvin Huang
- All City D4 2nd team: Gordon Tran, Ronald Ramirez
- D4 Coach of the year: Edwin Yau
