Man arrested for allegedly attacking woman in Boyle Heights church

BOYLE HEIGHTS –– Police are seeking more information about a man who was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman inside a Boyle Heights church this past weekend.

The victim was attacked in the sacristy room of a church in the 3300 block of Opal Street  — where Resurrection Church is located — at about 10:40 am on Sunday, May 6, according to a police statement. The man, identified as 50-year-old James Melendez, fled the scene after the woman defended herself.

Melendez’s vehicle was later located and impounded by police. Three days later Melendez was arrested and booked for assault with the intent to commit sexual assault. He is being held on $100,000 bail.

Police are seeking additional victims or witnesses who may have had contact with Melendez.
