The former USC med school dean has been barred from Lincoln Heights health science campus

USC said it is taking steps to sever all ties with Dr. Carmen A. Puliafito, the former dean of the Keck School of Medicine, in light of reports he used meth and other drugs while hanging out with young drug users with criminal histories. While Puliafito resigned last year, he had remained on the faculty, represented USC at public events and saw patients at the university-owned hospital. L.A. Times

An El Sereno collective has raised money and attention to keep gentrification at bay

The L.A. Weekly takes a detailed look at how the  Eastside Cafe, an El Sereno community space and collective, was able to raise enough cash to outmaneuver an investor interested in buying its Huntington Drive storefront.  After coming up with $180,000 to open escrow, the group is now closing in on its goal of raising a total of $450,000 for a downpayment to buy the entire corner building in which they plan to open an actual cafe.
