Beat the heat with these cool Eastside eats and drinks

Forget cooking at home. With the heat wave bringing temps near triple digits in Los Angeles, there is no chance that our sweltering home kitchen is getting much use. Luckily there are some Eastside area restaurants and bars  that serve up some hot weather dishes and drinks to help cool things down from the inside out.

Eat: Kale Caesar Salad at Trencher
The generous portion of Trencher’s Kale Caesar Salad is a satisfying (and healthy!) summer meal. Order with the deliciously cooked chicken for extra protein, but the house-made caesar dressing is mouth-watering enough.  Trencher is at 1305 Portia St.

Drink: Amvolf at Eagle Rock Brewery

A new release from Eagle Rock Brewery is a perfect hot weather beer. A German Style Pilsner, it’s a perfect day-drinking beer with its light color and decently low ABV (only 4.7%). On tap at the brewery in Glassell Park, the Eagle Rock Public House and a few other venues around town. Eagle Rock Brewery is at 3056 Roswell St.

Eat: Vegan Noodle dish at Viet Noodle
Although Viet Noodle in Atwater Village is known for its Pho, a really hot soup on a really hot day doesn’t exactly pair well. Since noodles are the name of the game, try the Vegan Noodle with cool vermicelli rice noodles with seasoned tofu, mushrooms, lettuce, daikon and carrots. Everything combined with the savory sauce and that tofu… it will leave you wanting more.  Viet Noodle is at 3133 Glendale Blvd.

Drink: Frosé O’Donnell at Bernadette’s
Two words: Rosé slushie. Bernadette’s“Dumbest Bar in LA,” located in Eastside-adjacent Downtown near Grand Central Market, pours this boozy frozen treat from its own slushie machine. The frosty watermelon helps cool you down while the Rosé adds that extra kick for the perfect adult treat.  Bernadette’s is at 361 S. Broadway.

Eat: Smoothies & bowls at Honey Hi
When avoiding turning on the oven at home, the hardest part of eating out is eating healthy. The Echo Park hipster spot Honey Hi focuses on gluten- and sugar-free organic dishes, featuring these bright, beautifully colorful bowls filled with loads of veggies, grains and proteins. Try “That One Bowl” with a turmeric poached egg, quinoa, kale, cucumber, tomatoes, watermelon radish… and more. Filling, vegetarian-friendly and super delicious.  Honi Hi is at 1620 W. Sunset Blvd.

Drink: The Meadow Rosé from Silver Lake Wine

Nothing says summer drinking like a cool glass of Rosé from brunch, lunch, dinner and/or dessert. The winemaker himself, Jasper Dickson, works at Silver Lake Wine and will talk you through the rare Graciano grape grown up in Lodi and how that lends to the wine’s light (and very drinkable) flavor.  Silver Lake Wine is at 2395 Glendale Blvd.
