DACA supporters rally at Echo Park Lake

DACA demonstration at Echo Park Lake

Demonstrators fill Park Ave north of Echo Park Lake | Martin Cox

ECHO PARK — Supporters of the DACA — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — program have converged at Echo Park Lake early this evening after marching up Alvarado Street.

The march and rally, which began in MacArthur Park, took place after President Trump repealed the program that shields about 800,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation and allows them to hold work permits. One person estimated that 1,000 people took part in the rally.

Police kept their distance as the demonstrators marched and arrived at the lake, according to residents. The demonstrators are expected to leave the park and head east to Downtown Los Angeles pm. on Sunset Boulevard.

  1. Now they’re marching east along Sunset to Olvera Street. Wish I’d known about this sooner — could’ve joined them at the lake.

  2. I am a complete supporter of DACA & the DREAM Act, however, as an American born in this country to Mexican parents who entered this country legally, I don’t appreciate when they wave Mexican flags during the rallies. Like what’s the point of waving large Mexican flags when you intent and want to remain in the United States? I understand your hate and frustration against the federal government, so am I, but as a citizen of this great country, no matter who the President is, I find it offensive when protestors wave large Mexican Flags. Like why not wave an American Flag? If you are here to stay, then why not show your pride that you are an American ?

    • really? You are offended by the Mexican flag, “as a citizen” of the United States? The matter at hand is more important than your distaste for peeps that love and include Mexico in this discussion. There should have been more international flags included like China, El Salvador, Armenia. An LAUSD banner would have been sweet. Don’t get so personal, DACA/Rhe Dream Act affects to many.

      • We should legalize them and make them pay taxes like the rest of us. But we all know that both democrats and republicans alike (remember that Obama had a democratic majority and didn’t make this happen) will just keep kicking the van down the road.

From a strategic/common sense position, I don’t think waving the Mexican flag is a good call. It doesn’t make Americans and legal immigrants feel like they support this country. But like the old adage goes, “Common sense is not that common.”

    • I see your point — I mean, I don’t agree with you but I respect your opinion. In the grand scheme, tho, it matters little….

  3. Offensive or not, people should be waving American flag if they want to remain in this country as law abiding and productive members of society. This is why we came to the United States; a better way of life and a new begining. This is the land of opportunity. Waving the Mexican flag is biting the hand that feeds you. Mexico brought me into the world, but the United States gave me life.

    • In many cases Mexican hands literally feed this Country.

    • True – people see the Mexican flags and game over for the cause. The flags speak to the loyalty of the wavers and contradict the whole point of the demonstrators. The message goes from “I want to be an American citizen, give me a chance” to the more in your face “Mexicans first you stinking Gringo”. Might as well declare Trump the winner in 2020 because that is where we are headed if the Sanctuary movement doesn’t get its act together and become more reasonable. At least pretend you have respect for this country otherwise you just proved the oppositions point.

      • Same goes for all the “liberals” who show up to protest in face masks, breaking windows and sucker punching Trump supporters… if we don’t get our sh*t together on the left, we’re basically gift wrapping the 2020 elections for 45.

        • Agreed. I have always been liberal minded, but after watching these fringe elements of the left act like crazy people while many MSM outlets basically justify the violence, I’m facing a bit of an identity crisis. Maybe the left is just as intolerant as the right, just packaged differently.

Seriously, stop waving the Mexican flag if you want to be granted legal status in America. It just makes you look stupid!

          • This is America you can wave any flag you want . You say your Liberal ? You sound more like a Trump Supporter . Your comment was stupid !

          • How many Mexican flags do you count in the flood of the “Defend DACA” and “I support DREAMERS” posters? Some of these posts are overblown.

The message was clear during this march. Too much has been invested in DREAMERS. Nothing was stupid about what the people brought to Echo Park. Thank goodness it was peaceful. The game is still on, Cali is going to lead the way, Los Angeles is the harbinger.

          • Good comeback Mario. I said “liberal minded.” I’m neither liberal nor conservative but support reasonable solutions for reasonable people by reasonable people (I currently support legalizing Dreamers as long as they have not be charged with a crime).

If you want to wave the Mexican flag while fighting for citizenship, go right ahead – it’s absolutely your right and I 100% support that right. But it doesn’t change the fact that it’s stupid. It’s stupid because it only hurts your case – a case that Americans across this country will have to support, not just those in Los Angeles (FYI, there is a country outside Los Angeles and California). And guess what, there are a lot of people across this country including Trump supporters that need to believe that these people love this country too. If this doesn’t make any sense to you, well, maybe you are a little stupid too.

  4. I’m Japanese American and I would never, ever wave a Japanese flag at some event where I was trying to demonstrate that “I want to stay in America.”

    It’s not even a question in my mind, it’s a total non-starter.

  5. Right On DACA Supporters ! I support your cause 100%
