EAGLE ROCK — With its strips of neon, green shamrocks and an old fashioned clock overlooking Eagle Rock Boulevard, the Connor’s Plumbing building is a neighborhood landmark. Now, if final approvals are granted, the same building will house the neighborhood’s newest bar and arcade.
The new business would be one of the most recent arcade bars to pop up on the Eastside, which is home to Button Mash in Echo Park and where New York’s Barcade plans to open a West Coast outpost in Highland Park.
The group behind Eagle Rock’s bar-arcade combo, Refreshment Center LLC, is seeking city and state permits that would allow it to open a corner bar serving beer and wine at 4680 Eagle Rock Blvd. That’s a corner spot next to Zweet Café with a retro design and clock above the entrance.
Public records show the owners plan to have 10-coin operated games in a 1,604-square-foot space. The new bar, which will also include two patios, would be operate from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily if permits are approved.
Connor’s Plumbing will remain in business at the back of the property.
The Eastsider LA reached out to representatives of The Refreshment Center, but no one wanted comment.
However, The Eagle Rock Assn., an influential neighborhood group, says the new bar will be called Connors Bar and it will keep the vintage clock on the exterior.
“The prospect for a new bar/pub called “Connors” and the preservation of the signage that for many years announced Connors Plumbing to the community is a great example of looking forward and looking back,” said the association on its website.
Update: Jeff Johnson, who is opening the bar in partnership with his brother, Brad, and friend Travis Echert, provided more details about the place. The trio owns Add-a-Ball, a bar and arcade in Seattle with 60 games.
“We will serve beer, wine, and great bar food,” Johnson said. “We will also have pre-90’s era pinball machines, no arcade games.”
Johnson hopes to open by the end of the year.
