Glassell Park Target store sets October opening date

GLASSELL PARK — The storefront at Eagle Rock Boulevard and El Paso Drive no longer looks like a Fresh & Easy market. It is now very much a Target – albeit smaller than a traditional store.

Signage is up on the building and around the parking lot, and crews are working overtime to get the store ready for its Oct. 18 soft opening.

Exterior work, which appears to be nearly complete, closely resembles a rendering provided earlier this year. Fresh & Easy’s green wall has been painted over with gray, and large sections of the facade are Target’s signature shade of red. Shelves and registers have already been placed inside the 32,000-square-foot store. A banner along the chain link fence advertised that the store is now hiring, though it was difficult to find any available opportunities on the corporate careers site.

In addition to a CVS Pharmacy and a Starbucks, this smaller-format Target location will offer “fresh grab-and-go grocery items, men’s and women’s apparel and accessories, select kids’ and baby products, toys and sporting goods, health and beauty products and more,” according to a release. A company spokesperson told The Eastsider in May that Target would also be applying for a liquor license for the sale of wine, beer, and spirits.

Many Glassell Park residents have objected to the appearance of another trademark bullseye in such close proximity to existing Target locations in Eagle Rock and Glendale. But the chain is pressing ahead with its plan to expand its footprint in Los Angeles with new locations opening across the area through 2018.

A Target rep said in an email that grocery items will represent 20 percent of the store to reflect community needs. “The Glassell Park store will have the same breadth of food and beverage categories as a traditional grocer but in a more convenient and curated package.”

Grocery offerings will include fresh produce and meat, dry goods, Hispanic and Asian items, grab-and-go selections, and dairy and frozen foods.

  1. It’s fascinating to think how different ER Blvd will be a year from now. Those two HUGE housing developments with retail space AND this Target. I know some will be upset by the “gentrification,” but I am super happy to see the area turning around and becoming a more livable, less gang-infested hellscape.

    0.3 miles from Starbucks on York

  3. Would love to have one of those in Lincoln Heights. My local choices are Smart & Final and Big Saver. Have to drive a bit out to Super King to get any decent groceries.

    • Same thing in Cypress Park. You have to drive. Smart and Final does not have decent meats. Super A has very good meat. They carry Choice grade meat. Smart and Final doesn’t.

      Target’s meats are similar to Fresh and Easy. Not much variety or anything anyone wants. Super A is still the best choice for meats. Super King has good and bad meat. You have to be careful what you get.

It’s pretty upsetting that we have a lame target popping up….20% grocery store items… aka 80% other stuff. “Same breadth…but in a more convenient and curated package”…such ridiculous corporate talk. Nobody needs to buy $10 dollar shirts and soccer balls so close to their home….this space should have been a nice grocery store. 1 mile further down the road you have access to the exact same nighstands and bath towels and lawn chairs…but in an even larger selection!! Why God why??? Now I have to hope one of those random grocerias on York goes out of business…

    • Makes one wonder if that other Target is going to be redeveloped at some point… certainly low hanging fruit considering the shortage of housing in LA (and all that prime real estate being squandered on a massive surface parking crater.)

    • This was a nice grocery store before; Albertson’s or Vons. But, people in the area didn’t support it, so it went out of business! Fresh & Easy was a stupid business model and was doomed to fail.

      There is a Sprouts about a mile up on Eagle Rock Blvd. That’s a nice grocery store. Support that Sprouts instead of whining about a building that has been empty for about 2 years, now has an occupant!

      • I’m thinking supermarkets haven’t succeeded in that one location because there isn’t that much population density in that area. There are better options nearby in busier areas, which is probably why that particular location has failed. Also, I agree with you. Fresh & Easy was a really bad business model. Less options and more expensive is what they should have called it.

  5. It is a shame that something more upscale that could really give Glassel Park the boost it needs isn’t going in but all things considered I suppose this is still a net positive for the neighborhood.

    • Why would we need something “more upscale?” I want things that are accessible to my neighbors who don’t make anywhere near six figures. Everything around us doesn’t need to be “curated,” “bespoke,” or “artisanal.”

      • At least where I live, I could really use a Ralphs, Vons, Trader Joe’s, or even a Ranch 99 over the Big Saver or Smart & Final. It seems that businesses just don’t want to open up in the area.
