Echo Park sandwich shop wants to join the night-life and entertainment scene

BY JACQUELINE FERNANDEZ

ECHO PARK — Three years after making its debut, Trencher, the neighborhood sandwich shop and cafe, wants to liven things up by serving beer and wine and hosting live entertainment.

“We’re psyched and looking forward to having beer and wine, and hopefully have it by late February, early March,” says Danny Zachery, co-owner of the small shop next to Little Joy Cocktails on Portia Street near Sunset Boulevard. “We plan to have weekend type events, we will start off slow, maybe with having shows a couple times a month.”

“Our place is small and we have to see what we will be able to handle,” adds co-owner Sherre Hardy. “We will probably end up with a variety of entertainment like movie nights, comedy, and music.”

But before any of that can happen, the city Planning Department must review and approve Trencher’s application for a permit that would allow it to serve beer and wine and offer live entertainment.

With a goal of catering to the late-night crowd, Trencher is seeking to extended its hours, according to its application. The new hours would be 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday if the city approves its permit. This often requires a public hearing to allow residents to weigh in.

According to LA Weekly,  Trencher  filled a “particular food niche” when it opened in 2014 as one of the few sandwich shops in the area.
