HIGHLAND PARK —  A “major emergency blaze” spread from one house to a second home this morning but was knocked down before it could spread to a neighboring apartment building, the L.A Fire Department said.

More than 100 firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze that began at about 10 am in 200 block of N. Avenue 53 near Marmion Way. Flames and a thick column of smoke rose above the rooftops in an area where houses and apartment buildings are packed closely together. It took about 70 minutes to extinguish the fire, which prompted the closure of nearby streets.

  1. We are so thankful to our firefighters and all emergency responders.

The photo by Benjamin Kidwell-Lein is newsworthy in itself.

  2. Best Wishes to the firefighter who was taken to hospital.
