Silver Lake’s Tintorera misses the mark

SILVER LAKE – Is it possible to have too much avocado? LA Weekly says yes, and opines that Tintorera on Sunset has done so. Food critic Karen Palmer says:

“On my first visit, avocado was on nearly everything: mashed under mayo-laden crab on a tostada; nestled in a wedge under the fish in that coconut-water ceviche; sliced into crescents adorning the top of a soupy arroz con pollo.”

Overall, Palmer reluctantly gives the Mexican seafood restaurant a poor review. “… It’s impossible not to be romanced by Tintorera,” Palmer says. But “overseasoning sabotages many seemingly well-conceived dishes, smothering more delicate flavors.”

Tintorera opened back in August with much promise and attention as Maycoll Calderón, already a famous chef in Mexico City, brought his ceviches and wood-fired fish and meats to L.A. It went on to harvest karma for bringing quality mescal and Mexican wines to the neighborhood. But the Weekly says they still need to get the menu straightened out.

Still, Palmer gives props for two offerings at Tintorera: The oddly successful ceviche with hummus, and the drinks. Even the alcohol-free Thai lemonade gets a grateful nod. Tintorera is at 2816 Sunset Blvd.

  1. Too bad, it’s a beautiful setting but I found the food underwhelming and overpriced.

  2. So you guys at the Eastsider going to start reviewing movies next?
