Two pedestrians were killed and several others injured tonight in a multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Indiana Street on the border of Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles, according to various media reports.
The L.A. Sheriff’s Department said that two on-duty deputies were involved in the crash. KTLA said that the deputies were responding to a call of a shooting when their SUV was involved a three-vehicle crash and struck the pedestrians on the street corner. One died at the scene, another died at a hospital, KTLA said.
ABC7 said the two deputies were taken to a hospital but were expected to be released tonight.
TV broadcasts showed that numerous ambulances and other vehicles had converged outside a Wells Fargo branch following the crash, which was reported at 7:33 p.m, according to the LAPD.
The crash comes less than a week after a collision about a mile west on Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights left an 11-year-old girl dead and four others injured. The victims were standing on a sidewalk near a taco vendor when they were struck by a car involved in a chain-reaction crash.
