Silver Lake’s “Mom’s Donuts and Chinese Food” serves up music video, hot and fresh

SILVER LAKE – Yes, of course, that’s Mom’s Donuts and Chinese Food To-Go in the new music video by the band Starcrawler – with the band playing outside of the familiar A-framed building on Silver Lake Boulevard.

The interior of the neighborhood landmark (well, at least to fans of donuts and Chinese food)  also serves as the backdrop for band members as they portray just the worst employees ever – ignoring customers, leaving the bathroom without washing their hands, touching the food with their bare hands and sticking an egg roll on top of a chocolate donut.

Then, at the 1:56 mark, they swing into their new song “I Love L.A.,” a thrash-rock ballad about working dead-end day jobs while pursuing whatever artsy dream brought you here. This “I Love L.A.,” unlike the Randy Newman song of the same name that predates it by some 34 years, will probably not end up as a stadium anthem.

How did a Silver Lake donut and Chinese food restaurant end up in a Starcrawler video.

“We shot it there because it’s kind of a classic LA spot,” said band member  singer Arrow de Wilde in an email. “We’ve always been a little obsessed with that little A-line donut hut….it’s so LA too, donuts and salty Chinese food. So that was the main reason, just to make it as original LA as possible.”

Eater LA provides some history behind the marriage of donuts and Chinese food in a few shops, noting it originated from Cambodian refugees — who are also credited with choosing the color pink for donut boxes.

  1. The owners of this place (I think it’s been there for 20+ years) are sooo nice! The man is always there, cheerful, kind, welcoming. Haven’t had the Chinese food but the donuts are delicious, especially the huge always-fresh Apple Fritters!

  2. Great Video! Who art directed / shot /edited it ?

(rockin tuneage as well. Very Cool Band.)

  3. I so hope that a loved one can help the young woman pictured find a way to become healthier. I also hope that her stick-thin figure is not admired and emulated by young women who see her in the video.

  4. It’s a nirvana song with different lyrics

  5. Someone give the singer a freaking doughnut!!
