Fence Fracas: L.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez takes the city to task after numerous Atwater Village residents received notices from the city’s Building & Safety Department advising them to paint bare wood fences and gates or risk a $660 fine. The notices were sent out as part of a code enforcement program to combat blight. “Blight is certainly a problem on commercial and residential properties,” says Lopez, “but when it comes to private property, let’s go after the over-heaped dumpsters and front-yard car-repair operations. That seems more important than the little stuff.”
RV Rentals: A KPCC story on the business of renting RVs, campers and other vehicles to homeless people included a woman who pays $500 a month to live in a box truck parked on the streets along the border of Echo Park and Silver Lake. “I mean, I don’t plan on doing it forever, but for now it’s kind of exciting and fun,” said Melody Groundflyer, a cable TV technician.
