Sunset Boulevard bed & breakfast proposed for Echo Park

Site of proposed Echo Park hotel

ECHO PARK –  A small six-unit hotel described as a bed & breakfast is being proposed for the 1200 block of Sunset Boulevard in a project called Sunset Terrace. It is one of two new hotels that have been recently proposed for a neighborhood with little in the way of overnight lodging – with the exception of short-term rentals.

J Lou Architects, describe the project as a small bed and breakfast with a 5-star restaurant, a gym, and rooftop space. The hotel would be constructed on a once sleepy stretch of Sunset that has in recent years  seen the arrival of new stores, housing and restaurants – including a branch of Guisados that opened across the street in 2013.

While J. Lou Archichtects  has been involved in several preservation projects, including the Hotel Normandie, the Echo Park hotel would mean demolishing at least two homes, one of which is 115-year-old, next to a public staircase before construction could start.  The city’s Planning Department would have to approve building a hotel near a residential area.

In addition to the small hotel on Sunset, a different developer has received city approval to build a much larger, four-story, 89-unit hotel next to the 101 Freeway onramp at Glendale Boulevard.

The owners of that project recently applied for city permission to serve beer and wine at the property.
