Crash leaves one pedestrian dead, another injured near Historic Filipinotown; woman rescued from El Sereno house fire

Fatal Crash: One man was killed and another injured after they were struck by a minivan on Sunday afternoon while on a sidewalk outside a doughnut shop on Beverly Boulevard and Alvarado Street. Driver Abel Paredes, 41, who police said  they believe was driving under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the LAPD Central Traffic Division. One of the victims, a 54-year old Latino man, died after being transported to a hospital. The second victim was transported to another hospital in serious condition. Fire: A woman a wheelchair was rescued after a backhouse in the 4500 block of Lowell Avenue in El Sereno caught fire on Saturday night. The woman suffered moderate facial burns and other injuries. NBC 4 & LAFD
