From Black History Month celebrations to date-night ideas, this weekend’s top picks are sure to have you covered. Visit Benjamin Franklin Library on Saturday to hear excerpts from books written by Black or Afro-Latino authors or take your SO to sample food that may have been served out of a horse-drawn wagon as part of a celebration of food trucks, new and old.
FRIDAY, Feb. 23
Entertainment: SORORITY: SPACE, a two-day celebration of the work of black women, will include performances, experimental movement and music that explore how black women have penetrated unwelcoming spaces while repairing and celebrating themselves. At the Lyric Theatre, Silver Lake.
Date Night: The Autry is taking it way back with its new dinner series, the Urban Chuck Wagon: 100 Years of Food Truck Fare. Multiple food stations will serve dishes inspired by a century of the mostly immigrant-operated food trucks, ahem, horse-drawn wagons, including oyster cocktails and tamales.
SATURDAY, Feb. 24
Art: Notable Chicano photographer, essayist and performance artist Harry Gamboa Jr. challenges the stereotypes of Mexican-American men by presenting striking black-and-white portraits of a diverse community of artists, writers and academics who identify as Chicano in his series, Chicano Male Unbonded, at the Autry in Griffith Park.
Dance: You better bring some rhythm and your dancing shoes to the Eastside’s biggest African experience party, Afro Lituation, a monthly party that celebrates African music, fashion and culture at Los Globos in Silver Lake. When you need a break from the dancefloor, there’s Suya to eat and a booth to get your face painted.
Learn: Be as loud as you want at Benjamin Franklin Library in Lincoln Heights during Say it Loud!, a Black History Month celebration of Black and Afro-Latino authors hosted by artist and MC, Miss Chelsea Monet, and Nancy Meza of Undeportables productions. Listen to guest speakers or take the mic to read your own work inspired by Black History Month.
Fitness: TFW you roll up to a yoga studio wearing your favorite Diabolic Masquerade band shirt. Well, you’re not alone. This Saturday, join a group of like-minded yogis at Indie Brewing Co. in Boyle Heights for a vinyasa yoga class with black metal playlist.
SUNDAY, Feb. 25
Dance: If getting irie is your thing, then this party will be too. Performances by Sabrina Soul, Eicko Richie and many more will honor the music of reggae legends Dennis Brown and Bob Marley at the 2nd Annual Tribute to Two Pioneers of Reggae at Los Globos in Silver Lake.
Learn: Join other women entrepreneurs and creatives in Silver Lake for Creative Brunch, where Q&As, workshops and discussions will center on ingenuity and uniqueness in the face of everyday obstacles.
Entertainment: Meet Sunday brunch’s floozy sister, Wasted Afternoon, at the Silver Lake Lounge. With a happy hour lasting through 8 p.m. and an Open Mic where anything goes, things are sure to get interesting (sloppy?).
Date Night: If you prefer chiller Sunday vibes, take a watercolor class at the first of Black Elephant Coffee’s free monthly community workshops. in Atwater Village.
