CYPRESS PARK — It seems like the rumors are true. The former Burger King at the corner of Figueroa Street and Cypress Avenue looks like it will become the neighborhood’s first Starbucks — or at least that’s plan for now, according to Planning Department records.
A summary of a department filing says Starbucks is the new establishment that would operate in the existing building and drive-thru. The new hours would be 4 a.m. to 12 a.m.
The Burger King has been closed and boarded up for the past few months. There has been no indication about what was going to take over the space until now.
The Eastsider reached out to Starbucks and property owners to get more details on the new shop but received no response.
In an interview with The Eastsider late last year, Yancey Quinones, owner of nearby Antigua Coffee Roasters, said people had been talking about either a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts replacing the former Burger King.
Starbucks does seem to have developed an appetite for Burger King real estate. Two former BK drive-thrus — one on Soto Street in Boyle Heights, the other on Marengo Street in Lincoln Heights — have been converted into Starbucks in recent years.
