Eastside Weekend: Women’s History Month block party; comedy in the dark; fantasy creature art

The weekend is chock-full of art shows, concerts, comedy and events celebrating Women’s History Month, including a block party with female vendors and lowriders in Highland Park.

FRIDAY, March 9

BandsWild Riot, a group that brings together creatives in the name of collaboration, will be hosting a group of female performers for A Female Front at the Lost Knight in Echo Park. Come for the music of Vild and All Things Blue, stay to get inked up for only $10.

Comedy – Who would a comedian poke fun at if they weren’t able to see their audience? Find out at DARK: Stand Up Comedy in Pitch Black hosted by comedian, Marlena Rodriguez, at the Lyric Hyperion Theatre in Silver Lake. Neither the audience members or comics will be able to see each other, making for an interesting night of experimental comedy.

Dance – Catch one of the greatest MCs of all time, Ghostface Killah, at Echo Plex in Echo Park. Performances by the living legend and Wu Tang Clan member and special guest Smoke Dza will be followed by a night of 2000s-era hip hop jams.

Entertainment – Check your phone at the door before hanging with the Eastside Jews during Unplug LA Eastside, a celebration of the National Day of Unplugging at the Box in Silver Lake. Catch performances by Bles’d and spoken word artist Rachel Kann and shop for arts and crafts from Makers Mess.

SATURDAY, March 10

Pet Friendly – Did you ever wonder why your dog likes to nap on your sweaters and chew on your smelly gym socks? You can finally find out why while learning how to train your pup to use his nose to its full potential during master trainer Mike Herstik’s workshop the Science, Craft and Art of K-9 Scent Work in Echo Park.

Family Fun – Don’t be afraid to bring the family to this roleplaying game and fantasy-creature themed art show at Leanna Lin’s Wonderland in Eagle Rock. From the Dungeon will feature work from such artists as SpookCutes, Super Ugly and Bwana Spoons. A portion of the proceeds will go to FixNation.

Entertainment – Divine Energy is bringing the heat to Highland Park this weekend with Divine Energy, a block party honoring Women’s History Month. With more than 25 female vendors, workshops, lowriders and poetry by Yesika Salgado, you’re sure to have everything your feminist heart desires.

Art – The Cactus Gallery will be celebrating it’s 13th year in Elysian Valley with an art show featuring cacti-themed art by more than 100 artists, including the cosmic desertscapes of artist Johnny Quintanilla.

Comedy – If you never quite grew out of comic books and you dig stand up comedy, this one’s for you! See animators draw comedians while their set unfolds during Picture This!, a live animated comedy show at the Virgil in Silver Lake.

SUNDAY, March 11

Comedy – Enjoy some comedy, adult beverages and friendship every Sunday during the Friendship Buddies Comedy Show at the Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park. This Sunday’s show will feature comedians Chip Chantry, Becca Greenberg and Mike Mulloy.
