Bagel lovers still waiting for Brooklyn Bagel to reopen

Remodeling work underway for Brooklyn Bagel

BY BARRY LANK

HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN – The sorely missed Brooklyn Bagel Bakery on Beverly Boulevard is set to return, says the owner, Vanik Elchibegian. They have a new oven – which just needs to be installed – as well as a new coffee machine and a new bagel display case.

The renovated store has all the city permits, including structural and health. They’re done with framing, electrical, plumbing. They’re all set to open soon, Elchibegian said.

He just doesn’t know when.

“This is the hardest for the owner,” Elchibegian said, “waiting for everything to be finalized with construction.”

The beloved bagel bakery shut down “temporarily” in May of 2015, after part of an exterior wall suddenly collapsed.

Bagel production has continued elsewhere, with Brooklyn Bagel still supplying area delicatessens, restaurants and stores. But efforts to reopen the Beverly store and bakery have proven more complicated and time consuming than expected. Elchibegian had hoped to have a cafe and take-out bakery open by Memorial Day last year  in a corner of the building once occupied by a pharmacy.  That obviously didn’t happen, leaving some bagel fans worried.

Another concern is that part of the property used by the bakery has been listed for lease as creative office and retail space. But Elchibegian said this will only be the second floor in back, and should not interfere with the baking operations.

The shop will be back, Elchibegian said. “It’s a guarantee.”

But when? Having failed with the Memorial Day 2017 reopening, Elchibegian avoided being too specific this time.

“I would say in the summer we should be up and running,” he said. “Summer is pretty vague.”

Brooklyn Bagel, founded in 1953 by Seymour Friedman, moved to the Beverly Boulevard location in 1965, according to the company website. Since then, it has become an institution, and regularly tops the lists for best bagel in L.A., including Los Angeles magazine.
