L.A. Unified school board member Refugio “Ref” Rodriguez, whose district includes schools from Silver Lake to East Los Angeles, was arrested last month and held for few hours on suspicion of public intoxication at a Pasadena restaurant, reports The L.A. Times.
Rodriguez, a prominent charter school advocate who was raised in Cypress Park, was released after a few hours and was not charged with any crime. However, he told the Times that he had joined a support group and is in counseling to avoid further problems.
“I realize that as a public figure I am held to a higher standard, and I take full responsibility for my actions,” he said in a statement.
The school board member is facing other problems as well. Last September, the L.A. County District Attorney filed felony charges against Rodriguez for allegedly violating campaign fundraising laws. Rodriguez has denied the charges and ignored requests that he step down from the school board.
Rodriguez also represents Board District 5, which includes all or portions of Atwater Village, Eagle Rock, East L.A., Echo Park, Highland Park, Silver Lake and other communities.
