Eastside Weekend: ’90s dance night in Silver Lake; L.A. River cleanup & Eagle Rock art auction


If you have not made your Earth Day celebration plans, consider attending the Sierra Club picnic fundraiser at Echo Park Lake or the L.A. River clean up in Elysian Valley. And, if you are not put off by slimy things, learn about worm composting or help plant a bee and butterfly garden at Heritage Square in Montecito Heights

FRIDAY, April 20

Family Fun – Bring the kids along for Odd Nights at the Autry where you can spread a blanket on the lawn and listen to live music while the little ones run wild in their own fun zone with a rock wall and massive inflatables. The Odd Market will have more than 80 vendors and pop-up shops and food trucks.

Dance – End your 420 right with some cumbias during Cumbiaton at First Street Pool and Billiard in Boyle Heights. DJs Funky Caramelo, Lady Soul and Kellye Kell will be in charge of the decks during the “grrrl night takeover.”

Dance – If you can’t seem to cut those Spice Girls and NSync hits from your playlist, then you’ll heart Club 90s at Los Globos in Silver Lake.

SATURDAY, April 21

Family Fun – Celebrate the little ones in your life during Dia del Niño at the Floricanto Center for the Performing Arts in City Terrace.  The event, inspired by the Mexican holiday that celebrates children, will feature youth dance troupes and musicians.

Do GoodCelebrate Earth Day with a picnic at Echo Park Lake to help raise money for the Sierra Club. Bring your blankets and enjoy some delicious food by the Beacon at Echo Park. Free guided tours of the park will be offered to participants.

Comedy —  Take a seat, order a glass of wine (or a craft beer or both) and settle down for a night of stand up at Wine Box Comedy in Atwater Village.

SUNDAY, April 22

Do Good – If you’re sick of seeing trash in the L.A. River, now’s your chance to do something about it during the 29th Annual Great Los Angeles River Cleanup hosted by Friends of the L.A. River. Saturday’s cleanup focuses on Bond Park, Bowtie Parcel, Marsh Park and the Frog Spot.

Shop – This Saturday and Sunday, the Union Swapmeet in East Hollywood will partner with L.A. Sewcial to bring additional crafters and makers to the space for a monthly pop-up event and co-ed clothing swap.

Bees & Worms — Help plant a bee and butterfly garden and learn about worm composting during  Earth Day at the Ford House Kitchen Garden at the Heritage Square Museum.

Arts & Auction —  Start or expand your collection of local art by attending the  14th Annual Art Auction at Center for the Arts Eagle Rock. The work of more than 100 artists will be up for bid in addition  to rare movie posters. Proceeds to to the center.
