Eastside Weekend: Mama & baby run; celebrating plant-based medicine & LAFC home game pre-party

Earth Month events are coming to a close with tacos, music and luchadores at Earth Week Fest in Lincoln Heights and an Echo Park pizza promotion that benefits sustainable public transportation.  Meanwhile, soccer fans will be celebrating the first L.A. Football Club home game  and a dinner and drag show features untold stories of the Titanic.

Read on for our top 10 events and things-to-do this weekend:

FRIDAY, April 27

Eat – Help raise money for sustainable public transportation while satisfying your craving for pizza with Mohawk Bend’s Hot Garlic Pizza. In celebration of Earth Month, a portion of proceeds from Hot Garlic Pizza sales during the month of April will go to the L.A. County Electric Bus Coalition.

SATURDAY, April 28

Fitness – If getting a sweat session in has gotten harder since having a baby, bring the little one and a stroller along for a morning run or walk at the L.A. Historic Park with Running Mamis.

Family Fun – Music, stand-up comedy, poetry, theatre and tacos?! Earth Week Fest at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights has it all. The bands EZ Tiger and the Furious Seasons will share the stage with musician and poet, Gloria Arjona, comedians Las Tres Chicanas and Luchadores. Arts and crafts, vendor booths and taco trucks will complete what sounds like a perfect Saturday afternoon.

Theater – Ever wondered what Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz would look like through a queer Latino lens? Queer Cuban playwright Juan Martin will show you in the play ALEX, now performing in Silver Lake, that takes the audience along on a man’s journey to find his lost cat, leading him into a topsy-turvy world inhabited by talking animals.

Shop – Tree Femme Collective and Eastside Handmade are coming together to host Bloom, a community celebration and pop-up shop featuring plant medicine at Amsterdam Modern in Echo Park. Learn more about plant-based medicine during Bloom’s wellness panels and workshops.

Dinner & Drag – Returning queens — Maebe A. Girl and Izzy A. She — will share with you the untold stories of the Titanic  during DRESS HALL, a monthly dinner and drag show at The Park restaurant in Echo Park.

SUNDAY, April 29

Do Your Part – Pick up some munchies and handcrafted gifts at Sante D’Or Foundation’s Craft Fair and Bake Sale in Atwater Village. Proceeds will go to Sante D’Or, an animal rescue organization.

Shop Locally – Shop for handcrafted gifts and goods made and designed by 30 young makers at Kids Hand Made: A Young Makers Market in Echo Park. There will also be DIY tables and face painting to keep the little ones entertained while you shop.

Football or Soccer? – Celebrate Los Angeles Football Club’s first-ever home game against the Seattle Sounders FC at The Base in Lincoln Heights. The Banc of California Stadium Opener Pre-Party will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dance – Join the Beat Junkies crew for Sunday School at the Verdugo Bar in Eagle Rock. Southern California’s masters of turntablism will be spinning your favorite hip-hop, funk and soul from 3 to 8 p.m.
