Eastsider Poll: How you would keep Waze traffic off your street? [poll now closed]

Residents say Dodger game day traffic has worsened with Waze

ECHO PARKKCRW warned of “chaos and danger.”  It’s a “traffic disaster” proclaimed The Drive.  The CBS Morning News described it as a “dangerous detour”  that neighbors say is causing “insanity.” What are all these folks and websites talking about? The Answer: Baxter Street — one of the steepest streets in L.A.  The media outlets rolled out their coverage  this week after  L.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez reviewed the traffic congestion and accidents that neighbors have blamed on Waze and other navigation apps.

Of course, Baxter is far from the only street in L.A. where residents are complaining about Waze traffic. Waze has resisted efforts to remove streets from the app while local officials have also failed for the most part to get the traffic apps to steer clear from what had been quiet residential streets.

Since Waze and its like are not going away,  The Eastsider would like to know what you would do to reduce that app-generated traffic on your street by taking our poll below (this poll is now closed):

Some of the “Other” recommendations made so far:

  • Resident only traffic during rush hours
  • Find out where Waze owners live and send traffic through their street
  • Have Waze and other apps indicate the steep grade to warn drivers of difficulty
  • Pretend to be a Waze user and sue Waze for sending you onto Baxter
  • Accept technology!!!
  • Live on a dead end
  • Simple: Build a tunnel under the street
  • Nothing…locals do not own the streets they belong to everyone in the city
  • You’re wrong. The street can be removed from gps apps. HHA did it for Beachwood
  • Large line of old & young people crossing the street in a circle so no one goes

  1. I live on Baxter. I’s true. Nobody dared go up that hill until that app came out. Now people tailgate me into my driveway all the time. They don’t respect the hill. It’s dangerous. In the past few years several cars have lost control and plowed into my neighbor’s parked cars twice and taken out a neighbor’s wall.

  2. It’s time for people to stop whining about PUBLIC STREETS BEING USED BY THE PUBLIC.

    It’s also time for taxpayers to reject the destruction of OUR streets with speed bumps and other impediments, which are built with our money at the behest of entitled NIMBYs who want to create a de-facto gated community.

    • I see your point. I often get upset when people complain about people parking on their streets, as they’re everybody’s streets. I used to live in Chicago and it was ‘Get out, I shoveled that spot’ and I sypathized with those people too. Thankfully, we have no snow or Baxter would be even more of a disaster. Baxter and Fargo are a little different IMHO though. You need to give cars space to turn into their driveways or accidents happen. You need to approach the crest of the hill with caution or accidents happen. The locals know these things. Unfortunately, most of the people driving up these hills these days do not understand how to do it safely. They’ve not seen the accidents or had their property destroyed. They’re just tryinmg to get home 2 minutes faster by taking a shortcut.

    • Certainly a public street is fair game to be used by the public. That said, I imagine that neighborhood streets were intended for access to those neighborhoods by either those who live there, work there, visit there, play there, shop or eat there, go to school there. I don’t think the streets were intended to be supplemental thoughorfares whenever major arteries are busy or they would have been built with that in mind with traffic lights, marked crossroads, higher speeds, and so forth. I believe the intent is to create access by the public to the neighborhood not facilitate overflow traffic through the neighborhood on frequent basis.

    • A speed bump doesn’t prevent you from using public streets… get over yourself.

  3. Waze routes people through a residential side street where my kid’s (public)elementary school is. All to avoid one left turn light at a major intersection two blocks from the school. The cars tend to be driven by people who are trying to shave a few seconds off their time, Ubers, etc., so they can be heedless. These folks are at most saving 30 seconds…unless it’s a school arrival/dismissal time, in which case they are losing time. It’s just a waste, and an accident waiting to happen.

  4. Sound an awful lot like another problem that stems from “car-dependency”

    Remember, this is the “City of the Future” that planned for automobiles as the primary method of travel, and now, somehow we are known globally for the catastrophic failure of auto-oriented planning.

    The irony of course is that those who are “upset” that the public is using PUBLIC infrastructure are the same ones that are vehemently opposed to things like road diets, mixed-use and density… those three things alone would make our neighborhoods, less of a drive-thru and more of a sit-down place

    Like a broken record… the solution is not to accommodate cars, the solution is to GET PEOPLE OUT OF CARS. Put people closer to places, reduce one’s need to get in a car altogether, reduce the appeal driving.

    • Well, while Waze or even just GPS surely is the one directing drivers to Baxter, the drivers also have more reason to look for another route ever since a red light was added just past the 2 Freeway end, and the traffic lights specifically now synchronized to make sure you have to stop at a red light, backing up traffic even more. This has only made the traffic jam on Glendale Blvd even worse — and people are seeking a way out of that.

      This has happened all around with road diets and more and more red lights and stop signs designed to interfere with traffic. It has been a big issue ever since Rowena was one of the first to go to a road diet — the surrounding neighborhoods there have been plagued by a lot of traffic now trying to cut through rather than try to deal with a mind-numbing bumper-to-bumper parking lot of a traffic jam on Hyperion and Rowena — and that is the only route to the freeway from the Hyperion corridor.

      These things going on to interfere with traffic have only backfired, no one has given up their car, and now they instead of using residential streets they previously never would have considered — Waze or no wWze.

      Residential streets previously were too slow and problematic to seriously consider over a traffic jam on Glendale or other streets. But now these road diets and red lights and other have crossed the line and set all this traffic down an otherwise too slow residential street. These efforts to run people out of their cars have only backfired terribly.

      • Thanks Tom. everyone always gives me shit when I bitch about road diets and bring up Rowena Ave. Love to hear it from someone so well spoken. Im just angry.

      • Once again, your problem has the same root.. blame the bicyclist for the woes of cars. The road diet is successful in that it slows traffic, reduces the appeal of driving and improves safety. The goal of the road diet isn’t to have ZERO effect on driving.. Also, the continued slowing of traffic in this city is absolutely having a positive impact on people driving behavior. You’ll think twice before buying or renting a home in Pacoima if you work downtown.

        As someone who lives on a cut-through street (Scott) and works on Rowena, I can tell you that the hyperbole being pushed from detractors is nothing more than frenzied propaganda. Rowena is in fact bumper-to-bumper for approximately 3 hours of the day. The remaining 21 hours, it’s a perfectly functional street with expected level-of-service AND a more pleasant public space for people that move through this city without a car.

        Get used to it.

      • I would say the experiment that failed is trusting car drivers to obey the traffic laws along Glendale Blvd., such as speed limits, honoring amber/red lights, and crosswalks. Because many drivers have been unable to follow laws, not to mention basic rules of civility, there has been a re-adjustment of the means used to get pass-through traffic (like what exists on Glendale Blvd.) to follow the rules of the road. Many existing road designs encouraged this kind of lawbreaking, and we’re trying to fix that.

The fault lies with the LADOT for creating this mess with their “Road Diets” Their brilliant “Vision Zero” plan wants to take two lane streets remove one driving lane and put in seldom used bike lanes. They have done this all over LA and created a traffic nightmare. Their plan is to slow traffic to a crawl making pedestrian and cycles deaths Zero. Just amazing these six figure earning idiots have a job making decisions for us. Stop placing the blame on apps or the drivers who want to avoid traffic to find a less congested or faster way home. These are our streets we pay for to maintain and use too. And stop creating nuisance laws to try to prevent motorists from using your precious streets in your neighborhood to get home. Buy your street from the city and create a gated community if you feel you own it.

    • Riiiiiiight… because traffic was just peachy at rush hour before LADOT implemented traffic calming measure for approximately 0.0000000001% of the roadways in Los Angeles.

    • R Patton knows – this is part of Agenda 21 / Agenda 2030 – its making traffic worse on purpose, ultimately to make driving near impossible and to restrict private car ownership for the masses. The major car manufacturers are moving towards a robot uber car model. The real estate developers are also making a killing selling stack and pack boxes for way more than they’re worth.

    Question why did they only install speed bumps on 1700s Lakeshore Avenue ? 2000s lakeshore Avenue , we have a Daycare center family housing & our homes are worth much more , yet being treated like stepchild. It’s a million dollar question

  7. My quiet neighbor street is heavily impacted now due to wayz. I realize it’s a public street, but the attitude of the drivers makes just getting in or out of my driveway hazardous! They pass me on the left or right as I’m turning in. They cut my corner causing accidents. To be flipped off, yelled at when I’m obeying the law is outrageous. There are children playing in their front yards as these drivers are speeding down our street. Don’t forget the majority of these commuters are looking at their cell phones too! We’ve complained to our city, Downey CA, but never get called back. What is our recourse?
