Suspect arrested in East L.A. bus passenger stabbing

East Los Angeles —  A man was arrested early this morning in connection with a stabbing on board a public transit bus that left an East L.A. College student seriously injured, said L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell.

Manuel Ortiz, 27, was apprehended today at about 1 am and is expected to be charged with attempted murder, McDonnell announced on Twitter. No other information was provided

The arrest comes after authorities released a video of the suspect who stabbed another passenger as they rode an eastbound Montebello Public Transit bus on Whittier Boulevard on  the morning of Monday, April 9.

The victim has been identified as Austin Zavala, who was riding the bus on his way to class at East Los Angeles College, reports CBS 2 and Telemundo 52.  Zavala had been previously described as being in critical condition following the attack.

  1. Glad Sheriffs caught this guy. Would like to know if video played a role in identifying and finding him.

    • According to npr his family turned him in. Didn’t mention if they had seen the video but it makes sense they may have caught it on the news.
