Looking for some art for your new apartment or to impress your friends? You’re in luck because this weekend offers a comic book and art expo in East L.A. and an open studio hosted by City Terrace painter and muralist Jose Ramirez.
Read on for our top 10 events and things-to-do this weekend:
FRIDAY, May 11
Green Eggs & Drag – Kick off RuPaul’s DragCon weekend with Green Eggs and Glam, a pre-party at the Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe in Silver Lake. Grab a “Strong Ass Margarita” and watch local and out of town queens — like Tranny Hooker, Indica Sativa and Izzy A. She — slay the stage.
SATURDAY, May 12
Get Your Nerd On – Female comic book artists will be at this year’s East L.A. Comicbook, Art and Pop Culture Expo in full force. The comic book convention will be held at the El Gallo Plaza in East L.A. and will feature booths with artists like Lucero Trejo, Xochitl Ramirez and Leanna Huynh, who will be selling merch and signing art.
Dance – If you can’t get those Ying Yang Twins and Soulja Boy hits off your playlist, then you need to make your way to Echo Flex: A 2000s Hip Hop Era Party at the Echoplex in Echo Park. DJs will be playing 2000s hits before special guest, Just Blaze, takes the stage.
Art – Browse – and maybe buy – artwork by painter and muralist, Jose Ramirez during his annual open studio in City Terrace. The Eastside native’s work is bright and inspired by Los Angeles’ cityscapes and pre Columbian art.
Bird Watch – Wake up early for a change to join the Moore Lab of Zoology at Occidental College to celebrate Bird LA Day with a morning of bird watching followed by a tour of their collection and lab.
Drink – Eagle Rock’s Craft Beer Cellar is calling all women who drink for the kick off of their monthly tap takeover by women brewmasters and women-owned breweries for a celebration of women in beer.
Cycle – No need to yell at people speeding down the bike path this morning! Make your voice heard at Elysian Valley Slow Ride with special guest, the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition, for a walk or ride along the Los Angeles River to advocate for safe speeds and healthy air.
Art – Prints of Dewey Saunders’ whimsical collages featuring cocktails, clouds and muscle cars will be given to the first 10 dinner groups who mention the artist’s name and answer a trivia question at Checker Hall. Stay and enjoy a DJ set and exhibition by Saunders.
Comedy – If you never quite grew out of comic books and you dig stand up comedy, this one’s for you! See animators draw comedians while their set unfolds during Picture This!, a live animated comedy show at the Virgil in Silver Lake.
SUNDAY, May 13
Art – The Autry’s newest exhibition Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain offers the first major retrospective of the Native American Artist who served in the Vietnam War. His paintings, drawings and sculptures are a reflection of Bartow’s personal and cultural musings reminiscent of painter Jean-Michel Basquiat.
That’s It For This Weekend!
