Eastside Weekend: Easy Rider under the stars; Super 8 filmmaking class; interactive theater and art in Eagle Rock

By LUCY GUANUNA

Movies and filmmaking rule this weekend with options to watch a movie at the Autry’s Outdoor Film Series, make your own during a workshop at the Echo Park Film Center or watch a Disney Classic come to life on stage at Casa 0101. There’s plenty more going on, take your pick!

Read on for our top 10 events and things-to-do this weekend:

FRIDAY, May 25

Drink – Did somebody say wine tasting and a Q&A with Jonathan Gold? YES. Barnsdall Art Park will be holding its 10th Annual Friday Night Wine Tastings with sunset views overlooking the city and a Q&A with the acclaimed L.A. Times food critic and chef Daniel Humm, a James Beard winner from Make it Nice. A NoMad food truck will be onsite to satisfy your wine-induced munchies.

Theatre – Dates to watch the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast have been extended at Casa 0101 in Boyle Heights to June 10. The show will be running throughout the weekend, don’t miss out!

SATURDAY, May 26

Filmmaking – Use a home movie camera to learn the basics of camera operation, shooting techniques and hand-processing during the Intro to Super 8 Filmmaking and Hand Processing workshop at the Echo Park Film Center.

Community – Join the Casita Del Barrio in East L.A. as they celebrate their one year anniversary as a housing cooperative and community space. Enjoy live music by El Rio and Obscura Luna, food, vendors and live art, but make sure to bring your own plates and utensils!

Family Fun – Do as the 49ers did during the California Gold Rush and Pan for Gold! at the Autry. The event is free with admission from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Outdoor Movie – Hippies, drugs and a cross-country motorcycle trip are what made Easy Rider a ’60s cult classic. Lay down a picnic blanket on the Autry lawn to watch Easy Rider under the stars. No need to lug around your snacks, just take your pick from the food trucks that will be there.

SUNDAY, May 27

Rescue Pets & Succulents – If you want to bring another rescue pet home but your partner or your wallet won’t tolerate it, pick up some succulents at the Highland Park Cactus and Succulent Society Spring Sale. 100% of the profits will be donated to the North East Animal Shelter. Pets will be available for adoption just in case you wanted to give a loving home to both!

Family FunChildren’s Storytelling Hour gets spooky with gargoyles at Libros Schmibros in Boyle Heights. Special guest, Neil C, author and illustrator of American Gargoyles, will be at the event to talk more about his book.

Performance – This ritual variety show where “anything goes” is structured as a ceremony, hence the name MULTI CULT 4. This Silver Lake show’s theme of love and work will be explored through performance art, music, comedy and more.

Art & Family Fun – Catch the last of a month-long series of open studio events by the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock and Chalk Repertory Theatre. The last day of Art Works/Art Words will feature interactive theater created in collaboration with visual artists and hands-on art making with local artists.
