LAPD releases more details of car-to-car shooting between suspects and officers

Highland Park —  The LAPD today revealed a few more details about the officer-involved shooting that took place earlier this week when a man leaned out of a stolen Honda Civic and fired a shotgun at a pursuing police cruiser.

Here is the LAPD’s most recent version of the  shooting:

“On May 21, 2018, around 12:03 a.m., Northeast Patrol Division uniformed officers were in the area of Figueroa Avenue and Avenue 52. The officers observed a Honda Civic and confirmed via their Mobile Digital Console that they were following a reported stolen vehicle. The suspects in that vehicle immediately sped away and the officers went in pursuit. While in pursuit, the officers observed the passenger expose his upper torso out of the passenger window while holding what appeared to be a shotgun. The suspect began to shoot at the officers, resulting in an OIS [Officer Involved Shooting]. The pursuit terminated when the officers lost control of their police vehicle and collided with the curb at Avenue 50 and Aldama Street. A short distance from the traffic collision, the suspects’ vehicle and a loaded shotgun were recovered.”

One of the suspected sustained an injury that posed no threat to his life. The officers were not injured.

The account provided by police today differed from preliminary accounts provided on Monday, when officers were said to be a few blocks south near Figueroa and Echo streets when they noticed the stolen Honda.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck earlier this week described the suspects as gang members but did not reveal their names or gang.

The shooting is now being investigated to determine if officers followed department policy.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the LAPD at (877) 527-3247 or supply information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS

  1. “Here is the LAPD’s most recent version of the shooting:” The writer’s use of Version seems to imply a prejudiced view against LAPDs recounting of the car-to-car shooting in Highland Park. The essential facts were the same, i.e., suspected car thieves started shooting out of their car window at police officers in their car, and the officers returned their fire. As they should have done.

Thanks, though, for not using “officer involved shooting” as a solitary headline as many news sources routinely do.

    • Hello. No prejudiced implied but we do have only one side of the story here. Ideally, with sufficient resources, we would have presented the suspect’s side of what happened as well.
