Mayor wants to interview police chief candidates — again; Cal State L.A. grad awarded $34,000 grant

Police Chief:   Mayor Eric Garcetti said he will interview the three candidates for police chief a third time and expects to make a decision within 9 to 10 days. Garcetti has previously said he planned to make his selection before the end of the month. Meanwhile, two police commissioners have publicly disagreed over whether one of the candidates — Robert Arcos, who grew up in Atwater Village — should have disclosed his daughter’s drunk driving convictions and problems. Budget: The City Council approved the mayor’s nearly $10 billion budget that features spending more money to deal with homelessness and road repairs as well as  increased revenue from legalized marijuana businesses. Daily News

Rescue: The two sanitation workers who helped rescue a 13-year-old boy more than 12 hours after he fell into a sewer pipe in Griffith Park will be honored at the start of tonight’s Dodgers-Rockies game. Daily News

Science Grant: Joseph Lucey, a Northeast L.A. resident who is graduating from Cal State L.A. this week, has been awarded a $34,000 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. He will be using his grant and stipend when begins his Ph.D. program at UCLA in the Hydrology and Water Resource Engineering. Cal State LA
